Yesterday Holly posted some photos of a lovely contemporary architecture studio on Decor8. The photos are all inspiring—full of space and light—but we were especially taken with this fun detail: the abstract impression of a rug painted directly onto the concrete floor...

In this photo of the larger, lofty space, you can see how the painted rug delineates the conference area and adds a note of warmth and whimsy amidst all the sleek metal, white, and wood. We love it!
This could be an interesting solution in any open-plan living space where different areas of a room are used for different purposes. Most of us might be reluctant to paint on our floors, but it certainly would be cheaper than buying a real rug (if more permanent)... any ideas about how to create this effect as a DIY project?

That's awesome! I love seeing painted floors like this. So cool. It really breaks the space up without making it feel rigid or unbalanced. I really like it.
Love love love painted rugs!!
I like the simplicity of the design and the restraint in color.
I'm reminded of a home improvements type program some 8 years ago that demonstrated how to make your own painted rug using inexpensive canvas that was color coordinated to the decor. This technique would allow for a bit of artistic experimentation before committing yourself to painting your floor.
AWWWW....I want one. I also use rugs to delineate spaces in my apartment, but I love the restraint of that one. There is a market in this.
That is such a great idea!!!
Beautifully done!
this is lovely. i want to dine in this room!
are those bunnies?
and the crash of the .com-boom era called: it wanted to know if it forgot its scooter at your office.
the scooter is to go from the table to living area...
I'd like a bit more color on the rug
and the concrete floors a re a little bit cold for me
Ooh, this gives me an idea! I've been dreaming of painting my dark wooden floors white for a while now, and it would be sooo cool to create a "rug" pattern by not painting in an area such as the dining, then the warm dark wood would peek through... know what I mean?

I am looking for meaning in those "bunny" shapes, too!
Kind of a cool idea if you aren't someone who would eant to move the "rug" around -- if the placement is permanent. It does delineate the space and add interest.
Me, I go for rugs mainly for the tactile qualities, though, so mere pattern wouldn't be enough.
I agree w/ Flobo - the whole space seems quite cold and uninviting...
...whereas a nice large red Kilim would have warmed up that space significantly.
I LOOOOOOOVE this! How would one keep the chairs from scratching up the paint, though?
Too bad I have wall-to-wall carpeting in my rental.
I see dancing otters and leaping dogs in mirror images--am I crazy?
It's a rug and a Rorschach test!
Love it. What is the chair in the picture?
ewwwww....no way.
The painted rug is a snapshot of reality. The Arch. Workshop's partners have between them 3 dogs and a rabbit - all of whom are part of daily life in the Workshop. Always gravitating to their caretakers, during conference meetings the animals curl themselves around the legs of seated people and of the table itself. The rug's pattern is generated by actual photographs of each of the dogs and the rabbit in their "usual" poses under the table. The 4 individual portraits were outlined on the computer and manipulated into a pattern of mirrored images and turned into a negative template (a stencil). The portraits include 2 springer spaniels, 1 border collie and 1 flop-earred rabbit. One of the spaniels passed away recently and seeing her silhouette lying under the table is a daily comfort.
