If you've been thinking about painting your fireplace, consider this option: paint the fireplace and the wall right up to the molding. It gives the room a bit of dimension and a definite focal point. Plus, we love that color...sigh.

What a great look. It makes the shelves and the wall look like one piece and gives the shelves so much more substance.
oooh thats nice. I also have a "faux" fireplace, and i am interested in either painting the walls on either side of it one color (while keeping the fireplace white) Or painting it like this pic. I like the purple and grey look with the white trim, looks good!
Love this colour, but I think I might have painted the mantel and brackets black or very dark grey.
Great looking !
I love the painted wall! Great choice of color. Not so sure about the muppet-fur rug though...just not my style.
Dimension is right! At first glance, I thought the area with the shelves was recessed and the fireplace area set out a bit. Now I see that the wall is just painted two colors. Nice effect!
It helps that it's an incredibly gorgeous color.
I'm just hoping that's not original stone under the purple! If it was previously painted wood...it looks cool. Oh, and HeatherAB, I think that the fireplace wall is projecting out from the shelf wall.
I've seen this photo before in a magazine (Canadian House and Home?). Shouldn't there be some sort of credit given for it?
I wish this photo went to the top of the molding. We have a fireplace with two recessed nooks on either side. And there is molding about a foot down from the top of the wall. I'm assuming you just paint to *below* the molding, not above it?
It's a painted white brick fireplace, with very very tall ceilings. We're just painting that one wall, and thinking of going a nice medium-dark grey. Just have to find the right one!
anyone know where those shelves are from? i like the built-in bookend style.
I'm pretty sure this comes from a recent issue of Living Etc., and is English (wish Canadian House & Home had images like this!)...
...the little hits of turquoise work well to prevent it from looking too dusty-lavenderish
