San Francisco shopkeepers can be so clever. We came across these "curtains" made of paper chains at Cielo on Fillmore Street. As soon as we spotted them, we had one of those "Why didn't I ever think of that?!" moments. They're a good reuse of magazines, plus they're super-easy to make. (Remember assembling chains with colored construction paper strips back in grade school?)
At Cielo, the paper chains are hung from a simple curtain wire. You can pick up a kit at Ikea for just $4.99 — which means this is also a really inexpensive weekend project.
We're busting out the paper cutter and mulling over locations for a paper-chain curtain in our own house.

I saw a room divider made of 2" squares of cut up paint by number paintings and had the same "why didn't I think of that" thought. (especially when I looked @ the price tag)

I have the kids make paper chains for the Christmas tree.
I agree--just not terribly practical for a long term project. Maybe if you shellacked the pieces? I dunno.
This is the kind of project where you really, really need a friend who runs a daycare and who will put a dozen four-year-olds to work in exchange for a large batch of cupcakes.
I really like this idea for short-term fun! You could also switch out the paper for a starched fabric to make a more permanent chain curtain. I might try this out.
