We've just come back from visiting the Central Park Zoo (NYC) and - as a dad - it's the first time I've been since I was a child. What a remarkable little zoo! And how nice to find myself going back now escorting my own child and seeing the wonder in her eyes....

Of particular note is the penguin area, which you can see pictured above. You enter a long, dark room and can see the flock of penguins in and out of the water through the glass. They swim FAST and Ursula loved it. If you click through the pictures without stopping you can get a little sense of how they swim as we took the pics fairly close together in time.
The Central Park Zoo has changed tremendously since our childhood. It was massively renovated in the 80's and is now a part of the Wildlife Conservation Society, which oversees all of New York's zoos.

That is still the nicest penguin exhibit I've seen, and I've seen many now--Bronx Zoo, NY Aquarium, Chicago, Atlanta, and Phoenix (seems like every zoo or aquarium has penguins!). The Rainforest exhibit is also awesome, and a great place to warm up in winter if you brave the zoo then. It is nice and quiet, non-crowded then!
Also, there's a children's book about those penguins in the Central Park Zoo, did you know? It's about a penguin baby and her two dads.

The tv show "Penguins of Madagascar" is about the penguins in the central park zoo. That's what I thought of when I read this :) But no, I've never been but want to. Too bad I live in Oklahoma!
