The Pothole Gardens are an ongoing series Dungey's been working on to highlight the imperfections of Britain's roads. If you were to try this yourself there certainly would be some logistical concerns like dodging traffic to water, replacing smashed flowers, breaking the law, etc... maybe it is best just to be inspired by Mr. Dungey's work.

Adorable, but ephemeral.
Ok this instantly reminded me of the time when I was on a road trip and took a shortcut to Dracula's home town, Sighisoara. It was after a summer rain and the potholes were so bad that the villagers' ducks and geese were bathing in them, and were very upset with this four-wheeled interference which was struggling to navigate their swimming pools. It wasn't exactly part of an intentional art series but I'm sure Mr. Dungey would appreciate it.
Oh, this is wonderful! I don't care if it's risky, I'm totally doing this. The city has neglected the po' side of town long enough.
i can just see them getting ridden over pretty fast. At least in NYC
Too COOL!!! The contrast of the rugged industrial asphalt and the flowers!
I think I'd crash into something while trying to avoid hitting the little garden or while admiring it!
Very inspirational!
Do it, then send a picture on that new app for informing city officials about potholes--can't remember the name . . .
cute!
My whole street would be a garden! Chicago winters are rough on the streets!
In Phoenix, we'd have to use cactus... but I guess that'd be worse on tires than the potholes were.
beautiful. reminded me of something I heard about on CBC last year: http://www.mypotholes.com/
"Flower abuse."
Luckily, flowers can be propagated again and again! So it's not the biggest deal if these get squashed.
I wonder how "foot traffic-hardy" plants, like certain kinds of grass or flowering moss, would fare. I love this!
LOL - cactus! That's ... what's the word I'm looking for... sublime? subversive? funny as all heck?
Imagine planting something totally ridiculous or inappropriate, like a tree or bush, if the pothole were deep enough.
Wonderful!
Although I think it wouldn't last too long.
Yeah for guerilla gardening!

Have you seen Mill Ends Park on SW Naito in PDX?
It's supposedly the world's smallest park, with little more than a few plants in a 2 ft wide hole in the road. It started in the late 40's when the city dug out a chunk of the road for a lightpost that never materialized and then folks nearby started planting flowers and putting little art installations there.
Neat post about the pothole gardens. Thanks, AT!
Haha! KinesthesiaAmnesia, I thought of Mill Ends, too!
