We love this idea that we came across at Ikeahacker. The Basisk table lamp provides all the bits you need for your light source, while a piece of birch (or any other wood), a drill and a steady hand finishes up the materials list.

The nice thing about this is not only is it cheap, it would look at home in a modern space as much as it would in a more traditional space.
