Last evening, we spent an hour hanging shower curtains on our living room and kitchen windows. We wanted 72-inch curtains that would graze the ledge of our large windows. Although that's not a standard size for window treatments, it's easy to find a 72-inch shower curtain...

We chose Pottery Barn's Organic Tile Jacquard Shower Curtain (no longer listed online, but available on clearance in some stores, marked down from $60 to $40).

We hung the curtain on a stainless steel rod with clip rings. Unfortunately, we forgot that shower curtains are a lot wider than standard panel curtains, so we'll have to go back to the hardware store for more clip rings.

After we hung the curtains, we decided to do another sheer white layer underneath, so that will be our next window project. We like the way it looks so far, and since the curtains are made from organic cotton you can't really tell that they're meant for the shower.

That's great! I have in my office the FLORENCE shower curtains from Ikea. They look great, and are also made of fabric, so they fall naturally. I love the pattern....and the curtain comes in grey/black, beige/brown, and white/offwhite.

Curtains are curtains - good for you for being resourceful and looking past the labels on the package.
I think they look excellent! Whatever works.
this is a great idea, shower curtains are usually less expensive and larger per panel which is a plus! i would never know the difference, they look great, and once you add more clips they'll be better!
sarah - this is genius!
now i want the blue one for my bathroom.
window, that is.
I used fabric shower curtains from Bed Bath and Beyond in both rooms of my last two apartments. They were really colorful and reversible, which was kind of cool when the sun struck them the right way - you could see both patterns in the light. It was a great way to add color to a rented apartment with white white walls...
And in one of my previous studios, I used a see-through plastic textured blue shower curtain to create a sense of separation between the kitchen area and the rest of the apartment. The kitchen was in the back, with no windows, so I opted for see through to keep it light. I attached a curtain rod to the ceiling and hung it behind my small couch.
Genius! I just used an Urban Outfitters bedspread for a shower curtain. Sort of similar.
Good call!
Why... didn't... I... think... of... that! Brilliant!
Wow, I thought I was going to mock this but I guess not. It looks sharp!
Ever sicne my thrifty college days, I've been using shower curtains for the windows. It's so much cheaper, and it doubles your off-the-shelf choices!
Good going and a lot cheaper then real drapes. Esp. if you can find them in a discount store like TJmax or Marshalls.
does anyone have a source for pretty fabric shower curtains?
there are a couple ruffled ones i like- but i think my hubby may find them to be too girly for the living room! i'd like something with a graphic pattern like the pottery barn one- but not tacky!
I've used shower curtains and long tablecloths, both work great, it's just fabric after all
I love my shower curtain- and yeah, as I was putting it up, I was thinking about how it would make the best set of curtains... alas, it was sold out :(
Isn't fabric wonderful!!! I've used just about everything for curtains. Even quilts when I lived on the tundra. If it works for you, use it!!!
Table cloths also make great curtains! The great thing is you do not have to sew any edges and you can sometimes get amazing prints that you can't get elsewhere. I have also used cute tea towels as bath or kitchen curtains. The good news is that both are usually inexpensive.
i've done the same thing recently. it's a nice "budget friendly" alternative. my only problem is that i didn't buy enough the first time and the store has run out of the curtain i originally used. any ideas?
