"Stained glass" is a bit of a misnomer for this window project, one of more than a few neat ideas in an eco-friedly renovated loft in Milan. Rows of jars filled with dyed water in a deep window frame make a colorful accent, one that would be super easy to recreate almost anywhere.

It's of course totally renter-friendly and easy to swap out the colors on a whim. We could see using this idea for a themed party.

Shaw's Original Fir...
I don't really like how it looks up close, but from a distance it's lovely.
That does look really cool from a distance...
Would never work in my house though, where we have a feline saboteur on the loose. In no time at all it would go from "stained glass" to "stained carpet."
So pretty, and so not earthquake-safe...
fyi... NOTHING is safe from earthquakes.
It would look great in the right room with even one row of it. It would look tacky in the wrong room regardless.
Yeah, baileyb, I can imagine it in a country style room and looking like a craft project gone awry.
what hyacinthine said.
I'm not partial to the jars used here, but I do keep interesting antique bottles, filled with colored water, lined up along my bedroom windowsill. The tops seal easily with dripped candle wax when there isn't a cork available. They're attractive even when sunlight isn't shining through them.
My mom did something like Vincent suggested and gets lots of compliments....
"We could see using this idea for a themed party." What kinda theme??
(sorry if the question seems sarcastic, it's not meant to - I'm just curious what kind of party you were imagining!)
Meh.
i like it. i just would be sure they were secured...something bumping the wall will send them all crashing onto the soon-to-be tie-dyed floor. (which could be cool I guess...)
Emika — when I wrote that I was actually thinking Halloween and Christmas, but I happen to hate orange and black together (and black "tinted" water? yuck), as well as red and green together. But baby and wedding showers where there's already a color scheme, school colors for a graduation, that kind of thing might translate well. Thanks for asking!
Clever!
If you have a high window with a bad view this would be great!!
I'm imagining this with prettier bottles or long tubes and clear (or tinted) water allowing the sun to sparkle through, and using this as a low tech heat transfer method to help warm, say, a bathroom in winter. Passive solar, like these used in an office lobby: http://www.bacorp1.com/images/LobbyWaterTubes.jpg, or these in a greenhouse: http://www.thenaturalhome.com/image12a.jpg
