The Apt designed this incredible apartment for Cindy Gallop, the chairwoman of advertising giant BBH. They had to convert the locker rooms of the first YMCA in the US for this and she didn't have time to inspire them with her vision. She told them at night, she wanted to feel like she was in a Shanghai nightclub.
To this, the Apt replied: "What if you lived inside a lacquered Chinese box?". The client was intrigued enough to go ahead with their proposal. They wouldn't add any walls, just a network of two-track curtains which could be used to make rooms on-the-fly. The only request by the client was a display feature for her 300 pairs of heels that Ms. Gallop cherishes. They are displayed in their own light box along the width of the apartment.
This is a great example of taking a somewhat simple space and adding complexity to it with design. It looks fabulous. The home theater room in integrated into a library and looks plain awesome. The idea of combining the two is really well done in this apartment. Naturally, the giant HDTV helps to make the screen visible far.
If this isn't enough to convince you, you can check out the Notorious B.I.G.'s video of Nasty Girl, featuring P Diddy, Usher, Pharell and Nelly which was shot in Ms. Gallop's apartment.

I'm jealous of her storage, but fully on-board with a black apartment. After all, our master bedroom is painted "almost black."

That is simply stunning, but hard to imagine that someone actually lives in that space!
Love the kitchen and the library.
Agreed.
But I must say, that bathroom area kinda creeps me out...
GROTESQUE! Inside a coffin? Waste of energy with all the artificial lighting. An example of ego over beauty. Not shocking, just plain awful. I tend to favor natural light; darkness is not sexy and I don't care who is the authority.
The videos are au courant, eh! Shallow and not revolutionary. Been there, saw that. Let's move on!
I could certainly live in that apt. not with all those heels though. Just not my idea of decor.
Oh, thankgod, space truly defining a primefemme. Cindy, you are what makes calendars worth purchasing. Ack, what does one's dentition have to do with design? I should know, I'm a hygienist with an art history degree.
Keep inspiring; the up and com(if they're lucky)ers need you!
Beautiful and aspirational - I love it....
Gotta love how people feel compelled to say her apartment is 'awful' or an example of 'ego over beauty.' My friends all hated the Red Room in my home - red walls, trim, and almost everything else - when they 1st laid eyes on it and now, guess where they all want to hang out? Yep - the Red Room. Taste is personal - if you don't like it, then it just sucks for you! I have a black music studio and I'd decorate it the same way in a second.
