Holy Bougainvillea! That's what we thought when we saw this amazing testament to the power of xeriscaping along one of Berkeley, Ca.'s fabulous Bicycle Boulevards.

We generally love bougainvilleas — they're so bright and romantic — but this one in particular blew our minds.

Bougainvilleas are very popular in California, and for good reason: We don't get a lot of rain here, and they are extremely drought tolerant.

Landscaping with native plants that need little to no supplemental watering (a main tenet of xeriscaping) is a good way to conserve precious H20.

Bougainvilleas, for instance, actually flourish in hot, dry climates. Oh, and they're pretty good looking, too.
