A longtime fan of guerilla gardening, we love this edgy idea for spreading wildflowers. Whether you want to bring some color to an empty lot or plant your own garden with some panache, here's to urban beautification!
They are available from SuckUK for £12.00 a piece. Could be a fun way to let off some aggression. Just be careful no one is watching or you'll have some explaining to do!

White Enamel Flatwa...
Somehow I think they would arouse less suspicion if they were not shaped like hand grenades.
gross
ah geez, really?! don't think we have to take it all that serious...
anyhow, my fav local store is featuring a similar concept: Seed Bombs! a local organization has installed seed bomb dispensers all over L.A. you can see the one at The Green Life here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=169987&id=47998399233&ref=mf
I'm all for seed bombs, but the broken pieces of these seem sharp and are basically litter.
I'm all for seed bombs! The grenade shape may be a bit much. Take off the handle and call it a pineapple.
They're just fake grenades filled with seed everyone, settle down and enjoy them.
I love how it takes the image of something ugly and destructive and remakes it into something that spreads beauty.
Search on "DIY seed bomb" and find many easy and inexpensive projects to make your own.
@sophiesmom - I'm sure the shell is biodegradable.
The only problem I have with them is the potential to introduce non native species. They don't say specifically what kinds of seeds they're filled with.
Yeah, the non-native thing would be an issue. My recommendation would be to seek out native seeds in your own community, and then build your own seed bombs. Doesn't strike me as a terribly difficult thing to do. Although this being almost June you've probably missed the best opportunity for seed bombing this growing season.
Cute, I guess, but seed bombs are very easy and very cheap to make. I couldn't imagine paying so much for these, and the carbon footprint from having them shipped in to the US seems to cancel out the whole environmental aspect that I associate with guerilla gardening.
Seems like litter to me - too many sharp pieces for an animal or child to come into. So unless you really want to pick up all the sharp pieces right after, it's a waste.
The original design is here:

And it addresses some of the concerns posted. It looks like the suckuk version is different - maybe you US people can get this version somewhere instead.

too bad... a grenade. this is a little much for me. Even though I understand the concept of turning something ugly into something beautiful, it just diffuses the real meaning and we might forget. Similar to ethnic cleansing. Yak.
Seriously, people? You're traumatized by a fake clay grenade full of flower seeds? That's...that's just sad. Honestly.
Still--far better to use seed bombs full of local species, yes.
Buy a bag of native wildflower seeds..then grab a handfull and toss....
Jeezum Crow, why have AT comment threads been overrun with tutting old hags who nag and tsk at every opportunity like a gaggle of Helen Lovejoys? Has AT been advertising a lot in Querulous Scold Magazine? Where are they coming from?
The seed bombs are a lot like Tara Reid - very stupid and slightly offensive, but kind of fun and not to be taken too seriously.
They're concept pieces, intended to encourage an IDEA, not see lots of serious use.
Besides, not advocating using them, but pottery of that type is remarkably unsharp when it breaks. Really. Highly unlikely to hurt any kids, and absolutely not going to hurt any animals. Unsightly litter, yes. Dangerous, no.
hilarious, I don't know what is wrong with everyone. I mean come on, it is a joke. Lighten up people.
I think they'd have been cooler if they were shaped like cartoony kind of bombs, the sphere with a string wick on them!
I'm sure it's intended as an artistic and _ironic_ message. Grenades that spread life rather than death? It seems like a penetrating critique of the military industrial complex, and suggests the reclaiming of socio-cultural space for peace and sustainable growth.
But, clearly the irony and critique is not trenchant enough because it seems to be disgusting people rather than getting them to think. Alas, interesting idea, but failed artistic comment.
Why are seed packets too hard to use? This might be a joke or an ironic concept, but it's a stupid one.
Who needs this? Why would anyone buy this?
I must agree with junklover - why not just buy wildflower seeds and just toss them around?
Seed bombs are meant to be thrown in the dark of night into fenced-off empty lots owned by developers who leave their land to weeds and trash between building projects. Guerilla greenies toss the grenades into the middle of the lot and give native species a chance to start.
It's hard to toss seed very far. Once it's rolled up into dirt or clay or a biodegradable container, a person can throw it pretty far, and direct it to specific parts of a lot with a 10 foot hurricane fence.
That's the concept.
