Are two better than one? The May 2008 issue of Metropolitan Home magazine featured the Hollywood home of writer-producer Gary Janetti. Designed by Antonia Hutt, we noticed an interesting solution she did for the living room coffee table. She used two end tables instead of a single longer piece..
She placed one vertically and one horizontally. We're thinking this probably creates a nice open flow when entertaining. We've seen this done with cube ottomans that double as coffee tables, but hadn't seen it done with pieces like these. What do you think of this idea? Do any of you use two smaller tables instead of a single piece for your coffee table?

It's an idea I've seen and used many times. The only thing you have to worry about is height. Side tables are generally higher than average coffee tables by several inches. It's important to choose side tables that aren't too tall for this to work effectively.
Although not a fan of the room posted, I do like the concept and have seen it done well. But the OCD in me would want the tables facing the same direction. Also, the tables seem to small for the couch pictured. Does the scale seem off to anyone else?
Yes, the scale definitely seems off. I've seen this concept elsewhere and liked it, but this doesn't look right.
Good idea, over thought. The two tables should have been oriented in the same direction. Non traditional uses often work best in a traditional context.
In Scandinavia, it's common to use a higher coffee table. I suppose that it can take away from the line of the sofa it's sitting in front of, but it's more functional to have a higher coffee table when serving tea/coffee to guests, and also when reaching for a book/magazine/paper.
Anyway, I like the look from having lived in Denmark.
