On a recent visit to a local winery, we spotted this creative reuse of old wine corks. Arranged in a woven pattern within a simple wooden frame, these corks made fitting artwork for the winery, but they'd also work well in a wine lover's home or kitchen.
The corks are arranged in pairs, which makes a rough square. Alternating the direction of every other one makes a checkerboard or woven pattern. We imagine these are probably simply glued to a backing in the frame. Seems it would be a pretty fun, simple DIY. And the task of saving up all of those corks doesn't sound half bad, either.

hey I made one of these like 20 years ago and it's still around. It's the most fun when you make them solely from bottles of wine you yourself have actually consumed! With corks going out of style these will be increasingly interesting in years to come.
It's not a bulletin board?
it's a bulletin board. art? i don't think i'd call it that.
these have been around for years. you can buy the kits at any craft store.
I've seen these being sold as bulletin boards, actually they would be called cork boards.
i made one of these recently, hot-gluing all the corks i'd saved to some cardboard. pushpin some photos in and it's a beautiful little corkboard. they have a beautiful one at jimmy seas in oak bluffs, martha's vineyard that inspired me.
great as a bulletin board. I wouldn't call this art, unless perhaps it's part of the Dada movement.
This would look great in my wine cellar in my house! I've seen them before at wineries but never thought about making one.
Really?! I always thought these were so tacky. Like, old school arts and crafts, pre-Renegade Craft Fair.
Yeah, I'm with legallybrunette...this idea is best left to the nice ladies in appliquéd sweatshirts. On the other hand, I don't think those ladies drink enough wine in a lifetime to accumulate that many corks.
Sometimes I can count on AT readers to write all the things I'm thinking.
my mother is a retired sommelier.
years ago, when she was still working, i made her a xmas wreath with corks.
My parents used to have one of these that they used as a hot pad. It's so simple and works so well!
wall decor? yes.
art? not so much.
Hi ! I've just made one and displayed it in my kitchen. You can check it out on my blog : http://nocesdecoton.canalblog.com/archives/2010/02/03/16777885.html. Hope U like it !
Cheers from France
These make great trivets, if you need one. I've made Christmas wreathes (but you need a LOT of corks so it doesn't look pathetic.)
But no, not art. Crafts aren't always art.
On our trip to CA wine country, I was thrilled by a life sized steer made of wine corks, in a shop, can't remember where.
i'm with the folks comparing this to arts and crafts.
i have a version of my own cork art... i think it does the cork justice and brings out the beauty! pics:
