Last Thursday night I attended 1% for the Planet's east coast bash for surpassing their one thousandth member and took the pics you see here (AT has been a member since 2007). It was a really nice affair, but particularly notable because I was able to meet Yvon Chouinard and Tom Brokaw and hear Yvon explain in unvarnished terms what 1% is all about...
Simply stated, it's a strong commitment to pay an annual "earth tax" on annual revenue (not profits) for the use of the earth. As he said, it's not a tax on profits, because even in a down year, the earth still gives of itself. It's a "use" tax, not a "success" tax. This is a big shift in thinking.
We've been a member of 1% for two years now and last year we gave our first check away to Habitat for Humanity of Kent County in Grand Rapids, Michigan and have been receiving super nice thank you's from them all year.
How did we choose that branch of Habitat? We asked you. Last year we asked all of our readers to nominate a 1% authorized non-profit and then we all voted. Kent County won out of six top choices. This year we'll do it again in the next few weeks.
I'm very proud that our company participates in this effort and urge you to check it out.
