Name: Lora
Location: Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles, California
We bought our lovely home in the end of June 2011 and have been making it our own by adding our modern meets nature style with a touch of glam and humor to it. The home was built in 1961(singer Joe Cocker was one of the original owners).
Tucked away in the hills, you can hear a calm stream flowing outside yet inside has an urban edge to our decor. This balance of city vs. nature theme in our home matches our love for the city yet the need to escape to a calm environment. We pay homage to the origins of our home with some mid-century modern pieces along with DIY projects, art from local Angelenos and other fun objects from fave retail stores.
Some special problems we had to overcome:
-existing fuchsia book shelves (nothing wrong with fuchsia, but too much of one thing isn't always great!)
-modernizing existing fireplaces on a tight budget
- brightening up the main living space without taking out any of the existing dark gray flooring
Thanks, Lora!

That framed art piece in the first picture's cool.
I really like the painting in the dining room. I would love to know who the artist is.
Ditto the previous two comments!
What a great place! How many sq ft?
Would love to see more!
I'd love to see some exterior views of what is obviously a very classic architect-designed house. Also more interior views. I love the windows.
Can you provide a source for the geometric rug?
What a tease! I want to see more of this beauty...awesome house! Love the indoor/outdoor living spaces.
Gorgeous home. Love the fireplace reno! We've just bought a mid-century ranch that is in dire need of a fireplace reno to bring it back to its original lovliness. Previous owners gave it an 80s facelift years ago and removed all semblance of character. Lora, can you please share what kind of contractor you sought out for the reno. General contractor? Mason?
AT, how about a full tour on this one? It's totally deserving.
Thanks everyone for the kind words. Now there is a full house tour just posted! :) But still wanted to answer some of the questions:
- @DY71 The artwork in the dining room is by a Canadian artist which of course I can't recall at the moment (doh!) but we actually purchased that at Z Gallerie a couple years ago!
- @VintageBirthday its 2416 sq feet
- @ASizzle the geometric yellow rug is from Chiasso.com
- @KellyKato the fireplaces - those were actually DIY! Now we're still in the midst of making sure we can actually light fire in there (vs just burning candles) but I did go to allot of contractors and they quoted us pretty high just to add the wooden slats and a new hearth. So for the wooden slats look, we found this company called Stikwood.com, its basically peel & stick application. They manufacture these wood slats in various finishes you can apply to almost any surface (walls, headboards, kitchen islands) and they really stick well! Reasonably priced at around $6-8 per sq ft. So definitely not as an involved renovation as it looks ;) Hope that helps!
