What do you get when you add hair pin legs to IKEA's lack sheving unit? Beauty. Absolute beauty. This unit was done by Jeff in LA who has a passion for Mid-Century decor and design and this Lack Hack holds it's own in this retro space. Check out another view and the how-to, after the jump.
With the addition of a track and a pocket door, this basic shelving unit has been transformed into something quite special, mixing retro and modern styles and coming out with a piece that looks great no matter what style of design you love.
Jeff was kind enough to share his process for creating this hack at home on your own, so make sure to swing over to IkeaHacker to pick up the full supply list (which isn't very long) and learn how to assemble one yourself!
Even if you're not in the market for a new media center, this would still make a great low bookshelf in your home or could even be made into a coffee table with a few additional modifications.

Very nice, clean and simple.
Nice Orbs!
Quick question: is there a way to get remotes to work with the doors closed on a setup like this?
Is there some kind of small infrared device you could set up on top of the "credenza" in order to receive remote control signals?
RKN:
You're on the right track, a simple IR Repeater system will do the trick. Most kits control 4 components behind closed doors and a small receiver will sit on top of the credenza. Prices are around $100
Example: Xantech Dinky Link Designer IR Kit on Amazon
I like the design effort of this project, but it exudes poor
wire-managment. If you're going to mount a TV, run the cable/wires in the wall or keep the set on its stand. It ruins the overall look of the media center.
Yay, Swampfox! Thanks for the information!
in my defense, there was a disclaimer about the wires in my original ikeahacker posting. I hadn't cleaned up the wiring yet, but I was so happy with the finished cabinet I submitted it anyway. If I'd know this would show up on other forums, I would have held off until it was all cleaned up. :)
indeed, remote signals do not go through the doors. I didn't bother with a IR repeater. I just leave slide the door partly open when in use, and close it when I need the place to look spiffy.
