Sutherland Hussey Architects. Because the Love Shack is located in the Lake District National Park, there were stringent regulations — the property originally didn't have planning permission or dwelling rights. Thanks to Guthrie and Sutherland's activism and local interest in sustainable, contemporary architecture, they were able to get approval and start building in 2007, five years after finding the site. Among other eco-friendly features, the cabin is clad in local larch and built on "mini-piles," rods that go into the ground without disrupting the root system. You can cook for yourself, or have the owners cook up organic, local fare, including picnic-friendly bento boxes. They even offer a 5% discount for people who take public transportation to get there. With mellow colors, beautiful views, and it looks like a pretty ideal woodland retreat. For more information, see Lake District Love Shack. Images: Karen Guthrie for the Lake District Love Shack.
