Lower East Side Storefront-Turned-Home

Messana O'Rorke

The Storefront is a project by New York City architects Messana O'Rorke. It is a Lower East Side residence situated in an unlikely storefront location. Hmm, Lower East Side street level living… perhaps not exactly what one would think first when it comes to luxury living. But through design, this place overcomes the concerns and is a remarkable retreat of a home:

Messana O'Rorke stripped the storefront down to its absolute bones, retaining them and nothing else for this sleek home. Slip through the front doors from the loud street outside and inside you find a gallery-like space of contemporary furnishings and art.

We find this project inspiring because it goes to show that — through good, thoughtful design — practically any space is salvageable.
