Name: Lucas (1)
Location: Norfolk, VA
This space used to be my craft room. Once our third child arrived though, we decided it would be better used as his own baby safe zone.
We had a queen sized mattress already, so we decided to try that out as his bed. I wasn't sure about how a mattress on the floor would look, but the baby just loves being able to climb up there himself. It has been wonderful.
The whole family gravitates to this room. It gets tons of sunlight (and we painted it a pale yellow). We used lots of colorful toys and natural wood in this space. Almost everything in here we already had from our other two children. The large mirror used to be over a vanity in my grandparents' home, now it's perfect for him to see himself and the whole room. I quickly made the little hanger for all the kids play scarves. An easy project and all the kids love it. The wood dollhouse is from an old kindergarten classroom. It's the perfect height for him right now. He loves pulling off the toys and books and putting them back in again. I'm planing on making a whole bunch of large star pillows in different fabrics for the bed, so far only that one blue one has been made.
Sources:
• The bookshelf is from Ikea.
• The mobile (his birthday present) is from Djeco
• The earthy card prints are a free printable from Mr. Printables
• The silk scarves and half the toys are from thrift stores.

Very nice. Looks very European to me, understated, not too overdone like typical American baby rooms. Thanks for sharing! I'm sure it's your favorite room in the house.
I really like this room but I'm concerned with such a large mirror. Don't know exactly why, but I am.
Nice large room.
This is lovely and looks like a wonderful play environment. Can you please share the sources for the little house shaped bookshelf and the wooden hook rack on the wall?
This open space is a breath of fresh air! I love how it's not overdone with stuff all over. This is a perfect balance which gives little Lucas lots of room to play : ]
I absolutely love this room - I think it may be my favourite that I've seen on AT yet! Gorgeous.
I tried to post earlier but lost the post. I really love this space and I like what I imagine are the Montessori and Waldorf influences as well. If we have a third child, I can imagine designing something very much like this.
Thank you all for such nice comments! I'm glad you like his space. :)
TUNATYA- the little house is an old kindergarten classroom dollhouse. It is made by Guidecraft. I found it at a thrift store. Also, the little silk rack is a quicky, homemade thing. Scroll down on my blog for a closer view. It is just wood, hot glue, and clothespins! :)
Thank you again all.
I love this so much. What a wonderful baby space.
This room is so peaceful and beautiful! I love the dollhouse and the wooden toys. I am amazed you can get your kiddo to stay in a bed without crawling out at 1 years old. Also, I think the mirror is great. My daughter's room has mirrored closet doors, and she loves them. Mirrors are great for little kids to explore and learn!
Thank you so much everyone! This has been fun. :) Psychobabble: I help put him to sleep at nap/bedtime and other than that, he does crawl wherever he wants. He's a mover!
You're the only other person I know of beside myself and a relative of an elderly friend who has let their baby sleep on a mattress on the floor. We were advised to never get a crib but have a mattress on the floor when I had my baby - I was shocked, but the person told me about a baby she knew who had had a mishap in the bars of a crib, and she firmly believed they were very dangerous for babies. It wasn't until we lived in a fully furnished townhouse when we moved to Australia with a narrow spiral staircase which would have been impossible to manouver furniture upstairs that we took heed. My daughter was 3 months old and we disassembled her bed and she slept happily on the mattress on the floor. Like you, we made the room/mattress area as beautiful as we could and child-safe, and when she learned to crawl, she would wake up and quite happily crawl out and play or "read" rather than howling to be let out of the cot. She started sleeping through the night very early too. She's our only child but if we had another, I'd do the mattress on the floor thing again.
I agree! Mattresses on the floor are wonderful! :) Thanks for sharing your story too.
