We've got a thing for hand-painted walls, so when we had the chance to visit Luciano & Marzia's home in Modena, Italy, we fell instantly in love. Their whole home is decorated in intricate designs (original to the 1906 building) but our favorite room by far was the bedroom, which Luciano described as "baroque modern."
When the couple moved into their home in the 1980s, the apartment was covered in flat paint, but Luciano researched the history of the building and found that the walls were originally hand-painted and stenciled in various styles. He hired an artist to restore the walls to their original colors and motifs, including the rich gold and rose tones you see in the bedroom.
Luciano and Marzia's personal taste tends towards more modern styles, so they decorated the room with a French Treca bed, lighting by Philippe Starck, and simple white bedding. The furnishings, though gorgeous, have a sense of subtlety about them that directs your eyes to the walls and ceilings.
