I'd love to use actual pennies.
LOL !
I really like the look of penny tile but how is it to clean? Little grout lines galore?
There can be too many pennies even for a penny-tile lover. Both 3 and 4 make me dizzy. But 1 is very well done.
So.Much.Grout.
I love the look and I doubt the grout would be any more trouble than other tiles. I do hate it when a classic like penny tile turns into a trend, though. Now it will be overdone and everywhere, then it will be declared "out" in a couple years...
The first image is actually cork tiles, not pennies.
Still amazing. Pinned it awhile ago, and the rest of the bathroom is great, too.
I have penny tiles in one of my bathrooms and never noticed any grout issues... maybe my dark grout is the answer? Also if you do use real pennies as tiles it is actually cheaper, but would be a lot more work. Real pennies can look beautiful but also risk looking crafty and ugly depending on the space.
A pretty penny tile wall reminds me of a lizard's belly covered by perfectly shaped and arranged tiny green scales.
I really wanted to do wall mounted faucets like that in a bathroom I'm redoing, but they start at around $400 each. They do look nice with that sort of back splash though.
I just refinished my bathroom remodel and I installed white penny tiles in the walk in shower floor. It isn't any harder to clean than any other tile. It's porcelain and very comfortable on the feet. Once installed you do not see as much grout as you think. I got mine from Artistic Tile and it is very affordable, less than $8 per sq ft.

@ mrsberg. I agree. I wanted to update an old dresser using REAL pennies. Does anyone know of any sites of where this has been applied?
The closest I recall on AT is coins being used on a floor.

is the link I was remembering. Some of the tecniques may be the same. You may want a temporary lip around the top to control the mastic or whatever until it dries.
I'm in the process of using actual pennies as the flooring in my new shower. It is cheaper, but yes, time consuming to create the mosaics.
