Name: Lyra (6 weeks)
Location: St. Louis, MO
For Lyra's nursery, we wanted to create a serene, feminine environment that would grow with her. We decided on a theme based on one of my favorite children's books, Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden.
Grandpa painted the flower wall mural and we did a subtle high gloss stripe accent on the opposite wall. The flowers are my favorite element and she loves to look at it while we rock to sleep. A lot of the elements are handmade, like the pillows and butterfly mobile, or hand-me-downs, like the mirror and trinkets, and we also included touches of woodland animals. The hardest part was editing down because the space is so small, but I think the simplicity adds to the peacefulness. We hope she loves it as much as we do!

Shaw's Original Fir...
Oh Grandpa! Could you paint my walls too?
Love the inspiration, love the room, and love Lyra's name. From "The Golden Compass", by any chance?
Beautiful mural. One of the nicest I've seen, in fact! Not overdone or too colorful, as they sometimes can be.
Another Lyra! And people always tell us our daughter's name is so original. :)
Lovely room, very calming.
The room is really amazing.
I gotta say, that ceiling fan is impressive too.
So lovely. The flowers are gorgeous and I really like the subtle stripes too! A great way to add extra detail without going overboard!
So simple, so good!
I was going to comment on this yesterday but while looking at the pictures, I fell asleep.
That calming; wonderfully done.
How did you make the mobile?
mdavis0226: Butterfly paper punch, white paint swatches, fishing line, and an embroidery hoop. You could use any sort of sturdy paper for other colors. I used the Martha Stewart all-over paper punch (available on Amazon). After you have them all punched, use a sewing needle to poke a little hole, string the line, and tie off with a knot so it wouldn't move. Tedious, but not bad to do while you watch a movie or something. It flutters nicely when the [fabulous] fan is going.
