We saw the lovely Mademoiselle Chair and felt instantly transported to some glamorous ladies lounge in 1970's Paris. Alas, in reality we were standing in the newly-opened 650 sq. ft. Kartell shop inside Marshall Fields State Street, which isn't bad either. There is something special about this Philippe Starck designed armchair: it is simultaneously retro and modern, humorous and ultra feminine. It has a very appropriate name. The charm has much to do with the patterned fabrics - the solids are not nearly as intriguing. Our favorites, the earthy/b&w Missoni prints and the candy-bright blue and red Chinese florals just sing when combined with the clear acrylic legs.

Our conclusion: this chair is a study in opposites. The combinations of fabric and plastic, softness and hardness, opaque pattern and transparent simplicity are what make it beautiful.

Available at Kartell in Marshall Fields, State Street.
