Name: Madie
Location: Italian Market area of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Our house was built in 1880 and was in desperate need of some work when we bought it in 2007. After we moved in, we removed layers upon layers of wallpaper and restored most of the original plaster walls. We also refinished the old pine floors which were covered in multiple layers of linoleum and red carpets. The house is a little quirky and it's on an odd-shaped lot. We embrace all the idiosyncrasies of our house and believe that these quirks are what makes our house special.
Our taste can be defined as eclectic and colorful. We travel a lot and we have a lot of fun things collected from our journeys. We accidentally ended up with two Milo Baughman chairs! One was scavenged in Texas during our undergraduate days and the other one we got from a thrift store in Philly. At the time we had no idea who Milo Baughman was!
We recently had a local artist, Isaiah Zagar, do a mural on the side of our house and it is absolutely stunning! My husband and our son who is almost two, really enjoy our neighborhood and the house.
Thanks Madie!

Ercol Bar Stool
This may be a good candidate for a house tour. Kudos to you for all that restoration work. The walls and floors look terrific.
I would love to see the rest! You did a fantastic job mixing colors and patterns in a way that is a lot, but not overwhelming. I really like the shoe shelves in the bedroom.
More please! Definite candidate for a house tour!
House tour!!!!!!!
I am really digging your little pad. I am oddly attracted to to that cool shoe wall in your bedroom. Nice job!
Mural! Where's the mural!
Also, where is your couch from? I love the shape and color.
Loving the colors and the quirks!
Wanting to see more, esp. the exterior and mural, as well as the kitchen, etc.
Only thing I'm not really loving are the exposed shoe shelves.
I secomd the couch comment- this is the second couch I've seen like this on AT in the past few days and I would LOVE one that size and shape for my tiny apartment... Any sources? Is that a specific type of couch?
Charming! I can't imagine what a pain it must've been to remove layers of wallpaper from plaster walls. My favorite item is the desk lamp with the round green shade.
Quirky, charming, personal, stylish..... I love it. That shoe display is like art.
I would like to see a house tour too! I live in Philly and am always curious as to how other Philadelphians arrange things in their rowhomes. Plus, I'd like to see wider shots of the rooms - I really like the use of color. Fun, but not overwhelming.
I'm also curious about the floors - especially the kind of condition they were in once the layers were peeled back, as my house has the original pine underneath carpet and I'd like to refinish them as well.
My house has layers upon layers of wallpaper too (I've counted at least five in the kitchen). It's on the ceilings, painted over, textured, textured AND painted over - but I'd much rather remove it from plaster than sheetrock ANY day.
What's the source for the blue couch? Love it!
Books in the fireplace! Love! Also, the couch suspense is killing me! I need it.
Wow - I have the exact same coffee table!! I inherited it from my aunt. I also have two matching side tables. Where did you get yours??
LOVE it! It looks so homey, cozy and just plain awesome. You could get so much creative stuff done in this house; it inspires creativity.
House Tour please! :)
Gotta love the Lane Acclaim coffee table- NYGirl202 you can google Lane Acclaim for more info.
I like this a lot!! Ditto on the house tour!
Love how you stored your shoes in the bedroom.
Great house, lovely colors. Could you tell me where you found that rocker in your living room (tucked into the right hand side of the photo)?
Goodness I love your house. You have also inspired me to display my shoe collection out in the open.
Alright Philly! Isaiah's a great guy -- bit of a nut, but a true original.
So where's your kitchen? Shot #3 looks like you converted it into a den, with the door out to the backyard.
I agree - charming and cozy. I'd love to see more of this house. It's so nice to see a house where the owners' personalities shine though!
I'm loving the shoe shelf!
Not a fan of the overall look but that apartment has some wonderful features - the white front? door with that blue paint looks amazing
Very charming! I'm not a fan of the chair in the second picture, but everything else I love. The overall style is great, and I especially like the bedroom. Nice use of color, too, without being over the top. Would love to see the full tour. :)
I love love love your house! And it gives me hope, as I too have a Philadelphia rowhouse that came with multiple layers of wallpaper (all removed! next step: plaster repairs) and original pine floors underneath the green carpet/red carpet/linoleum/plywood. (Also all gone: floors refinished.)
@the urban girl, I'd highly recommend Julio of Pro Floor Sanding. He refinished our original hard pine floors and they're beautiful. A bit rustic -- i.e. you can see the gaps between the boards, and the original nail holes -- but if you like that look (I love it) they're great. Pulling up all the carpet (and the staples) is backbreaking, but so worth it.
I heartily concur with everyone who wants a tour, by the way! Love the colors and collections.
Thanks for the recommendation philadelph!
I would so much rather restore/refinish than put down new floors. I'm trying to keep as much of what's left of the original house as I can. :)
This place definitely deserves a House Tour! :)
what a beautiful place.
Thank you everyone for your generous comments! Sorry for the late response but I had no idea that AT had run this post.
The couch was from Crate & Barell. I don't think that they carry it anymore.
the urban girl: The floors were covered in multiple layers of linoleum (one layer even looked remotely like wood) and red, blue and green carpets. The floors had a thick layer of black linoleum glue on them. We had the floors professionally re-finished. They had been covered up for so long that they were in great shape.
aweekinparis: I bought the coverlet in India twenty years ago!
NYGirl202: I got the Lane Acclaim coffee table at Berlin Mart, an outdoor flea market, in New Jersey. I also have the matching end tables that I found at a Goodwill store.
Zoo: we got the rocker at a thrift store in Texas for free! They had so much inventory that they were giving away things for free to college students.
Arkay: the kitchen is between the dining room and what you call the den (which is actually my little office room). I could only submit 5 pictures to AT and there is a lot more of the house to photograph.
the urban girl: if you get your floors re-finished I would recomend that you leave the gaps (unless they are really big gaps). Wood expands in the warmer months and it needs space to expand.
Thanks again everyone and I hope I answered all your questions.

Love your living room... so cozy! A house with plants always makes me swoon... Great job making a warm, cozy place to come home to at the end of the day...
LOVE this, gorgeous!
