If you live in an apartment building, you probably don't get to have an iconic free-standing mailbox. Mail is likely delivered to you in a bank of locking boxes. But that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the red flag and familiar shape of an old-fashioned mailbox in the decor of your apartment interior.
In the home pictured, a standard mailbox has been mounted to the wall just inside the front door. It's worked into a grouping of pictures on the wall and we think it would work wonderfully as a landing strip, providing a bit of storage for dropping off keys - and yes, mail - when you first step in the door.
What do you think of mounting a mailbox on the wall inside the door? We can imagine it helping with all sorts of organizational issues. If you have bills you need to remember to stick in the mail when you leave the house, keep them in the box with the red flag up. Have a message you need to leave for someone else in your household? Start a system where the red flag up alerts them to a message inside.

Would rather have it sitting on that table..the bulkiness of it looks out of context like that. But cute idea..maybee in a country style home.
I pilfered an old weathered mailbox from an abandoned house in the country. I turned it upright and use it as an indoor planter. Absolutely love it. There is something so strong and simple about it and it has such great character. Love my mailbox it brings a little bit of suburban living to my apartment.
Ok, maybe, but what's up with this wall?
yep I agree with jacksonlalonde, this wall gives me anxiety!
re: the mailbox idea...... what about a row of them in a kid's room for toy storage?
or......outside of an office/cubicle at a creative workplace to leave paperwork and notes for co-workers? this way nosey people wouldn't read other phone messages that are none of their buisness like they do where I work. snoops!
Neighborhood kids vandalizing and pilfering from our free standing rural style boxes forced our p.o. to create a nearby lock box. I miss my handsome red box with its flag and jasmine covered post. I think I'll relocate it indoors, because now I see a few dozen fun places to repurpose it!
I'm honored that you featured my indoor mailbox!!! SO stinkin' fun :) Thanks Apartment Therapy.
Actually most anywhere in a city one doesn't have that type of mailbox. Most single-family houses in a city have a mail slot or a house-mounted mailbox. The things on the post are called "rural mailboxes" by the post office, and they're for places where the letter carrier does the whole route in a truck (reaching out and putting the mail in a box at the curb) rather than walking as they do in a city.
I like the mailbox idea, but also not so crazy about it being on a wall. Maybe on a table, or on a post?
