Why not just buy the IKEA Edford for $249 and paint it black?
'Scuse me, the "Edland."
re: raina-I would venture to say that the quality of the Crate and Barrel Stafford Bed is more than likely much better than IKEAs bed quality. Not that I don't have items from IKEA that surprise me to this day that they are still standing and look incredibly good considering, but I wouldn't rule out the quality factor in this situation.
From a DIY standpoint though, you are 100% right about buying the IKEA Edland bed for $299 and and painting it black. Easier on the wallet and still gives you a really similar look.
I bought that bed at the Crate and Barrel outlet for $100! I actually bought 2 and took the best parts of both and sold the leftovers on craigslist.
