This just in. A super quick reader from the West coast, wrote in to point out that IKEA makes a very cool free standing kitchen that is much cheaper than the Japanese Sunwave: the ATTITYD.
If you are looking for a mini kitchen, go to (none other than) Ikea. They have a $900 unit that combines cabinet, small fridge (hidden behind cabinet doors), a two burners sealed cooktop, stainless countertop and sink, and faucet. A bargain at that price, and available in Seattle Ikea at least, if not nationwide. Wlai
It is not availabe online, but should be purchaseable through the bricks and mortar. (Thanks, Wlai!) MGR

Does it come with an oven too? Looks like I see one in the picture.
I guess the quality of the appliances is rock bottom at this price?
Holy crow! I just moved into a place with the smallest kitchen I've ever seen. To add insult to injury the shelving is slap dash plywood and the appliances are old and decrepit. I'm totally going to try and talk my landlord into installing this!
I recall seeing this at Ikea in Shaumburg, IL (near Chicago) earlier this year. It seemed like a nice unit, and I had fantasies of including it in small modern minimalist cabin by a lake. As shown in the picture it has a small two-burner stove, sink, and very small fridge about the size of a "dorm-room fridge;"it does not include an oven. Alas, my small "cabin" continues to be a very minimalist tent and a camp stove.
I went to IKEA this weekend to see this unit, after finding it buried in the Kitchen Catalogue. The woman in Elizabeth said that they once had it on display but put it away because you could only special order it. She was able to give me a printout with some basic information, but she had no idea when they would show up again. It has a ceramic cooktop, a basic sink and a minifridge with a freezer compartment. You cannot change out the doors, so you're stuck with the whole grey and stainless look. If you wanna put that high school French/German/Spanish to the test, you can try searching on the european websites for this item. IKEA also makes another mini kitchen that fits in an armoire, and they have a picture of the open fridge there.
I like this item, but since I can't visit it or change the doors, I might just recreate it out of a cooktop, sink and fridge. You guys who've seen it -- are the appliances cheesy? What do you think? Is it on display in other places?
Keep in mind that of the photo above, the unit is only the horizontal unit with the sink/cooktop, not the upright unit with oven. The stainless sink and faucet is basically the regular Ikea offerings. The cooktop seems quite nice, with sealed burners, while the fridge is basically a mini bar fridge. If live in the city though, why not buy fresh grocery every day! You can definitely keep milk and drinks in there, and it'll probably keep grocery items for a few days just fine, but it won't be a Subzero at this price.
I saw this self-contained kitchen unit at an Ikea outside Washington DC (in Woodbridge, Virgina's Potomac Mills uber-mall). The mini-kitchen looks so cool in real life...actually better than it looks in this photo. The quality seemed good, I thought, although I never undestood the whole idea of spending $5000 for a refrigerator anyway. It seems like when I saw it there was also an identically-sized unit without appliances that was for additional counter & storage space.
i am searching for a kitchen island. the standard height, but narrow. bottom shelf for storage of bulky items. either wooden or stainless steel. can you please tell me where i can find it already fabricated. i cannot afford custom made storage. thank you. i'm in love with your web site.

Where can I see this free standing kitchen
It is also displayed at the College Park, Md. IKEA. Saw it last night and wondered what others thought of it.
I am shopping for a mini kitchen and was ready to buy the ikea attityd but was a little worried about no oven.Further searching led me to the King mini kitchens. They have a great web sit and make many different mini kitchens from 36 to 60 inches wide with many combinations/possibilities on stoves or no stoves ,sink size refrigerator size, etc. The biggest one has everything and is only $1700.Not bad considering. Also the refrigerators are bigger and have freezer compartments. The only drawback that I can see is that they are not as styled as the ikea but I am thinking that the functionality may be best for me.Just google KIng Mini Kitchens.
I saw this mini kitchen at Ikea in new haven in the scratch & dent section a few months ago. it was sooo cool! It was as a display unit, sticker on it indicated that there were a bunch of them for sale due to a phase out of the product/ no longer carring it in stock. I think it was less than $200!
my spouse & i tried to convince ourselves that we needed one somewhere, anywhere in our modified Cape size house! But alas, it was not to be.
Sorry, forgot to add note to Lorriane above concerning her need of a inexpensive island.
I REALLY wanted a Sears rolling tool cabinet or 2 as the basis of an island in my kitchen, well when i finally went to buy one they were pretty $$$ ($200-500 each).
So i spent some time in the tool dept. checking out EVERYTHING they had for inventory & discovered a great item "The Sears Project Center" on sale for $199.00 - it came in a few different sizes, a lovely dark shade of industrial gray, w/ 5 ball-bearing drawers of different sizes (just like the tool cabinets), a cabinet door with an ajustable 2 shlef unit behind it, a galvinized steel top, and a metal version of a peg board on either end. Just what I was looking for in a price i could afford! We have lived with it now for almost 4 years and i LOVE it. After a year or so i removed the galvinized steel top & replaced it with a resturant kitchen butcher block top. We also put the whole thing on 2 appliance roller thingamabobs so we can clean under it.
I see your post was 2 years ago...but if this info could help anyone else out.....if you don't mind the industrial look, it is a great workhorse of an island. And good if you don't own , but need the workspace/storage space
Also look at AJMadson.com, on sale 8/5/06 + shipping = 801. Also, appleappliances.com I think same but more money.
I was googling the King Mini Kitchen, and I saw that there is one listed on Ebay at the moment, from someone in Northvale, NJ.

I am selling this unit brand new. I am moving into a condo so I do not need it. It's great for small living quarters or basement kitchen.
gem... what is the price of the unit you are selling??? i'm in new york city, urself?
i have one of these attityd's already and i love it i should have purchased more for gifts... and the appliances are fridgidaire and electrolux - ikea should have never stopped selling them!
I have been trying to find this IKEA kitchen unit for some time now.
Anyone, including Gem, who has one for sale, or has seen one, please, PLEASE, let me know!
I live in a New York studio apartment and I only have 48" in width for all of the kitchen appliances. Some companies (like Acme, which is what is installed now) do make these smaller all-in-one units, but they are very "institutional-looking" in addition to being poorly made.
At one time, IKEA in Elizabeth did have some units left, but the salesperson there told me that they were returned as defective. She also told me that there were lots of problems with these units functioning properly.
Has anyone had problems or heard of such problems?
Many many thanks
