Apartment Therapy on Improvements

2005_1_11_menatwork.jpgMen at work. Some days we are just too busy with our real work (imagine that) to do as good a job keeping up with this site as we want to, and with it gaining more readers each day it is only going to get harder for us (or anyone) to keep up...

We want the site to be a pool for all the good information there is out there about apartment living in NYC, so we are working on ways of allowing readers to comment and submit and/or post to the site more easily.

The beauty of blogs is that they are easy to read and to post to. The problem with blogs is that they are not as open to readers as, say, a forum or a listserv...

We were up until well after midnight last night brainstorming how to improve the site and one area we talked about was store reviews. In order to make it easier for people to comment on and ask about stores and allow others to reference them, we thought we would try a few experiments and see how they go. The following post is the first one. Let us know what you think. MGR

Max,

I don't know what to say. Since I discovered your site after reading about you in the NYTimes I consult your site every day.

You are a talented guy and post very valuable comments in here. I always wondered how you manage to have a life after searching and post in here almost every day.

You are a smart guy and I hope you will find a solution that will not let your fans in the dark.

Peace.

I've got the same problem, kinda. I have to sneak in reading your site at work. I too consult it everyday. Thanks for all the cool leads! There are several stores I have never heard of. I appreciate the links to their website?
Thanks, Lorne

Increased readership doesn't mean you need to increase blog content. I for one appreciate this blog as a consitnt voice of quality and insight and would be sorry to find that dilluted.

I have to agree with AP. Max, I check this blog daily because I can rely on its impeccable quality -- your keen eye for keeping life simple, your design sense, your practicality, your intelligence and spirituality -- as well as SK's fabulous pieces about food and flowers. And I am particularly excited about the new poet laureate. It may be a bit elitist, but I would hate to see that diluted. I'd rather see it only, say, three days a week, in order to maintain quality over quantity and for you to keep your sanity. But maybe that's missing the whole point of blogging...

I agree. Quality over quantity, the antithesis of the vulgar pillow from The Finished Room.

Screw your own sanity!! We are addicted!! (kidding, of course. Well, about the "your sanity" part...!)

One of the advantages of this kind of site over a free-for-all or a listserv is that there is an editor. (Or editors, in this case, but not an infinite number of them.) The web is wonderful in that everybody can contribute, but I do believe in the power of an editor, who filters out the extra and leaves the best. (Guess what I do for a living?) AT is wonderful because of the discerning sensibilities of the people who run it, and while reader participation is crucial, the finished doesn't need to be a group effort. After all, anybody else who has a lot to say can get their own blog!
