Bedroom #1: MK's Brooklyn Retreat

Our first entry. Photo and 3 tips below the fold. (Thanks, MK!) MGR

Why our bedroom is the MOST beautiful:

"Our bedroom exemplifies the pure function of a sleeping / dressing space in NYC. We are big believers in bringing the feeling of a space/location into its decor. The mix of organic and man-made, hard and soft materials reflects to us the feel of NYC and the former factory the apartment is in.

Nothing in the space is at odds with anything else. The lines don't clash, they rest. We have never slept as well as we have here, and that in itself is beautiful." MK

The FULL Bedroom decorating tips:

"1. The bedroom should be a place of retreat, relaxation, and passion.
Make sure the necessary evils of phones, alarm clocks, tissue boxes, etc. are easily available but discretely placed (ours are on a sunken shelf behind the headboard. You can reach through the slats or around the edges but they remain out of site unless you are in the bed).
We've also placed uplights on this shelf which makes the headboard area glow in the evening.

2. Bedrooms in loft spaces like ours can create problems of intimacy and privacy. We used a sheer curtain and tall wardrobes to mentally separate the bedroom from the rest of the apartment. In spaces where the bedroom is not defined by walls, use visual cues like curtains/screens/shelves, changes in paint color, etc. to mentally separate the space.

3. The odds are you sleep 6-8 hours a night. That's 25-33% of your life! Spend some extra money on truly luxurious sheets and a good mattress. Not only do high quality sheets look fantastic, but they feel wonderful. Invest in some egyptian cotton sheets and don't believe that thread count is everything. Many high thread count sheets (over 400) use twisted thread. It's a handy way to double the count, but it makes for a very stiff heavy sheet that may not be as soft as a 300 count sheet made from better cotton."

I'm curious about why people voted "I could NEVER sleep there."

Why NEVER? What bothers you about it?

I like the sheer curtain at the foot of the bed. Makes it secluded yet it still looks and feels like a larger space. That bench is really nice too.

It's hard to see in the photo here, but the bed actually steps out from the wall about a foot and has a floating shelf behind it supporting the vase and the lights.

Thanks for looking everyone!

I could never sleep here. To me, it screams "We love Good Design" in that not-a-designer, only-modern-is-good way. The slatted bench, the matching slatted headboard, the faux-industrial metal-edged mirror... not very original, but is very boring. Kind of junior-investment-banker-with-arty-girlfriend space. Sorry.

I like it a lot, especially as I see the other room photos come in. I like the wall of closets (or wardrobes) and the shelving with etched glass doors, which echoes the sheer curtain. I love the curtain and the Nelson bench. Are there cabinets under the windows? And do you have any window coverings? only 2 minor criticism--the reading lamps and the plants look out of scale; both seem too small. I'd put a big tree in front of the mirror and put the small pots somewhere else. Also might think about a midtone-to-pale bedcovering rather than the very dark one you now have. very appealing, over all.

Overall, I like it. Very Zen. They play it safe in terms of design, but it's still tranquil.

ONE PROBLEM
I would get rid of the plant on top of the headboard. I wouldn't sleep very well, knowing that there was a chance (no matter how slim) that the potted plant would land on my head in the middle of the night.

It is functional, calm, uncluttered, peaceful. Very unpretentious, yet ahhh design - contrary to an earlier comment I read about being pretentious.
Good job! come to Connecticut and help our bedroom.

Thanks for the comments everyone. P, the plant is actually on a foot wide shelf that just blends into the wall and is the same thickness as the top of the headboard. In the photo it's almost invisible, but in real life there is really no chance of the plant falling on us! There are top down/bottom up shades for the windows, you just don't see them in the photos. One think I like which didn't come out in the photos is that the curtian doesn't actually go all the way to the ceiling. The curtian rod is hung on monofilament so that it looks like it just floats in place a few feet below the ceiling. We did this because the ceiling is quite high and a floor to ceiling curtain just looked odd. Honestly, it's hard to capture a space in two photos I think.

And I'm not an investment banker (junior or otherwise), though my wife could be described as "arty". ; )

Oh, and Martha, I love the idea of a big tree in front of the mirror. Unfortunately that would leave us with no mirror for getting dressed!

I like the bench and I like curtain; I wouldn't get in a discussion over whether or not a person's taste is pedestrian or not, however, one concern I see is linear - the space appears long and rather narrow and the furniture and asundries appear to accentuate that rather than move the eye horizontally - everything goes up and down in other words - for me personally I'd want to try to stretch the visual space a bit more horizontally - I would bet it would make the space seem more comfy/cozy. Space has great light though, doesn't it? That's wonderful.

I love the hazy coolness of the sheer curtain, the frosted glass cabinet door, and the metal mirror frame. I agree with Martha that a pale color on the bed might be better—actually, I think it would be great. Maybe a platinum color? Dreamy. Also, I think that the cabinet or radiator cover under the window (can't quite make it out) would benefit from being painted to match the walls. This would make the space look less busy, more serene. (And the small plants—maybe at least group them?)

I think it's a great sleeping place!

i like the whole sheer curtain around the bed and the theme is kinda nice. but you need to add more to the room. it just seems a little too plain.

There is NO personality from the room. It is not cozy...inviting to relax...or to be intimate. The color is so baked potatoe. Try again using some cool color on the walls!
