Bedroom #10: SH's Laughing Laotian Ladies

2005_2_18_SH (4).jpg
Final Day! Enjoy and thanks to everyone who risked life and limb (and the peanut gallery). MGR

Why MY bedroom is the MOST beautiful loved:

Why I love my bedroom: Nannie's spindle bed; duvet made by tiny laughing Laotian ladies; bitter orange walls E. painted one year ago for a Valentine's Day surprise, and which I, fickle as I am, still love; homemade Thai bird poster & interfacing light fixture; grandfather's tent revival panorama above the bed; Burmese linen basket; Richter Rasterbation; Phnom Penh slippers; morning light through the pocket doors; weekend crossword puzzles; camera-shy Lily purring on the pillow above my head.

TIPS:
1. In a word: Featherbed.
2. Love the one you're with.
3. And if you can't be with the one you love, know what makes a nice companion?
--NPR from a small AM transistor radio under your pillow.

oooo I really like this room- have to say it's one of my top favorites from this competition! The wall color, the windows, the interesting art- mashed together yet it all fits! Super Yummy (first time I've voted something using the highest vote)! I do have a question about the large piece or art over the bed- is it seperate squares that make up one picture? or a poster of some sort? Reminds me of a windwow (which makes the room feel even bigger). What exactly is the picture of? I like the colors in it. Wish I could see more pictures of your space!!!!!

*window I meant. Sorry, renegade letters!

I don't know what the the submitter used for the image near his bed, but there is something online that can do this. The Rasterbator is a web service which creates huge, rasterized images from any picture. The rasterized images can be printed and assembled into posters up to 20 meters in size. (just do a google search on "rasterbator")

thanks for the info pixiepoint! I do have some regular photo-sized images I would love to have made into poster-size. I'll have to go look into that now.

That rasterized picture is from a painting by Gerhard Richter, called "Betty".

This is a very cool room. I'm not sure I could live with the orange, but it does look beautiful. And I love the mix of the traditional bed with the modern art and bright walls. I'd love to see more pics. But what is that last one of? And I'm not sure about the bed side table. It's the same height as the bed, but something about the scale seems a little off.

I love your apartment. It looks so inviting. The risk with that orange-ish wall has paid off -- it is bold and warm at the same time. Looooove it. What a nice view to wake up too.

Yep, it's a rasterbation of Gerhard Richter's "Betty," printed with borders onto photo paper. Our next project is to print an old panoramic photograph of the Brooklyn Bridge onto transparencies and cover the bottom portion of the window, so that we still see our bit of Flatbush peeking through the skyline. Those panoramas are part of the American Memory Project site.
|| Michele, I think you're onto something about the scale of the bedside table, but it's a convenient height for Lily, who likes to drink my bedside water (yuck!). The last picture is of a light fixture we made by making a cube out of interfacing and a Thai bird poster. When the light is off it just looks like an off-white cube on the ceiling, but when the light is on, the birds show through and the light is nicely filtered.

this is a great room. a few minor criticisms though- the bedside table is too small for the bed. looks sort of miniature there. second, i would suggest changing up your bedding - the white looks very flat. what about a coverlet and more pillows? i would do pale neutrals with pillows that tie in the orange of the walls and the green of your accessories (the fan and side table.) really just very minor things - this looks like a wonderful place to sleep. i love how the items all have meaning for you. that is always the problem in designed spaces - not enough personal history!

Wonderful ambience, especially the view of the rest of the apt. from your bedroom. I have a horrible, white, upright plastic fan in my bedroom and was considering replacing it with a more retro-looking one. I like that yours seems "suspended" without occupying floor space. May I ask how it was mounted and where you got it? Many thanks in advance!

What is that piece of furniture under the window at the far end of the room ? It looks like a sideboard with open holes. Where did you get it from ?

I wish there were at least one more shot of the bedroom itself, so I could tell what was going on in the rest of the room. I love this room, but really wish you'd take the bed out of the corner. At least center is on the wall it's on, which is only moving it a few inches in this case, but I bet you'd love the difference it makes. Love the view from the bed, too!

Hate to be the lone naysayer, but, sorry, I just don't see it... love lots of the separate pieces, but not feeling the mix. And I usually LOVE the mix...

fan--it's an old GE my dad found it at a yard sale. The pole pivots, and the end of the pole slips through a two-holed bracket mounted to the wall.

sideboard with open holes-- IKEA! It's a LACK unit turned on its side and covered with a foam cushion we--well, E.--made.

more pics requests---C'mon, I've already put photos of my bedroom on the Interweb--now you want to see my "bad side" too?

i'm so slow that i just now figured out that these are photos of shannon-the-poet-laureate's apartment. i really should have guessed because i love your pieces on AT and i love this apartment, and they seem to fit together. it's all very domestic sensualist, a la laurie colwin -- which is the highest compliment from me, by the way.

What paint color is the orange wall? I'm looking for something similar

Shannon - Do you actually use the IKEA LACK shelf for seating? I've been contemplating doing the same with my black LACK shelf, but worry it will collapse if used for seating.
