Found! Granada Tiles

072308_granada.jpgLooks like the tiles we've been loving recently here and here have something in common. Like they're made by the same company (who knew?). We're sort of bowled over by how beautiful they all are. Check out where they're from and where to find them here:

Books in the Rafters Update: Affordable Lighting

010408_books.jpgThe Look! Store your Books in the Rafters Post was a pretty popular one, so we wanted to update everyone with what's been done for lighting:

Tile Vault: Green and Yellow Provençal Tiles

072308_tile4.jpg072308_susina.jpgThe font sort of says it all, but as soon as we walked into Susina Bakery on Beverly (after checking out Modernica and Walnut Wallpaper) we were charmed.
Walking in feels like Art Nouveau meets the South of France meets California. Chandeliers hanging, sweets baking and yes, of course, the tiling throughout the store is warm and beautiful:

Look! Austin Color Inspiration!
Austin

Adrienne has her eye out looking for inspiration all around Austin. Whaddya think?

072308_grafitti.jpgAustin is a gorgeous and colorful city, with plenty of views to inspire any home's color palette. Bring a little bit of urban edge to your home with these colors inspired by actual Austin graffiti!

Simple Green: Try a Low VOC Paint

atla051508ecopaints01.jpgWe talk a lot about the wonders of adding a coat of paint to spruce up, well, life. It seems the right color can transform a room or a piece of furniture into something so awesome you hardly recognize it. Painting is normally a quick endeavor that can happen in an afternoon or over a weekend. Make it green by checking out a paint that doesn't have harmful fumes and toxins, aka a low or no VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) paint:

LA Scavenger: Carved Wood Hollywood Regency Style Headboard

072208_craig.jpgHere's a little noontime scavenger for you to peruse while you're eating lunch! We've been looking for some affordable headboards and we love the idea of this one painted a bright turquoise. Use it with a king bed or go smaller and let it hang out on either side. More good stuff after the jump (including a Paul McCobb Dresser!):

Good Quote: On Mirrors
Austin

mirror_bird.jpg"I had a parakeet that used to fly around the house and crash into these huge mirrors my mother put in. Ever heard of this interior design principle, that a mirror makes it seem like you have an entire other room? What kind of jerk walks up to a mirror and goes, 'Hey, look, there's a whole other room in there. There's a guy that looks just like me in there.' But the parakeet would fall for this. I'd let him out of his cage; he'd fly right into the mirror. And I'd always think, 'Even if he thinks the mirror is another room, why doesn't he at least try to avoid hitting the other parakeet?'"

Q&A with Chioco Design!
Austin

Adrienne brings us an interview with the designer behind the Galaxy Cafe, check it out and tell us what you think!

072207_galaxy.jpgOwner Jamie Chioco, the lead designer behind the dynamic Austin design firm Chioco Design, is leading the charge of great Austin design with amazing commercial and residential projects. If the name Chioco sounds familiar, it's because I featured one of Jamie's great designs, Galaxy Cafe, earlier last week. The work coming out of Chioco design is warm, modern, detailed and progressive. Jamie graciously offered to answer some questions about his company to give a peak into the inner workings of an amazing Austin design company.

LA Thrift and Antique Stores Roundup

072208_thrift.jpgWe've covered a lot of stores around LA and wanted to highlight some of the eco-friendly ones, you know, thrift stores, the place where you buy stuff someone else owned at a (normally) much discounted price and antique stores where you're still recycling but normally spending a bit more for something in better shape. A bunch of our LA favorites after the jump:

Palm Springs Vacation Rentals

072108_palm.jpgAs Grace noted, there are some options out there for getaways. We've rounded up our favorite Desert Getaways already, but thought the whole area of Palm Springs and Desert Hot Springs deserved another look: this time, houses you can rent with a bunch of friends:

Demotivation for the Home and Office: Despair Inc
Austin, Texas

Here's Kristin with some demotivational spirit to brighten your day!

despairinc.jpgSeeing the Orange Beautiful prints posted recently at AT:Chicago reminded us of Austin-based company Despair, Inc.. They make lithographic prints that seem, at first glance, to be those cheesy "inspirational" posters you'd find hung up next to a row of cubicles, in a dorm room, or over the desk in a home office. You know -- the kind with a dramatic photo of a person standing on top of a mountain with a word like "SUCCESS" below it, followed by a quote. But look closely and you'll realize Despair's posters aren't at all meant to inspire or motivate: These are Demotivators.

A Place in The Sun: On the Cheap

072108_patiowow.jpgWe helped out the bf with his patio situation so that he would have a place to hang out outside instead of squinting into the sun. Only issue was that he really didn't want to spend any money, and certainly not on new stuff, so we used our heads and put this together for a little over $100.

Simple Green: Recycle at Ikea

072108_ikea.jpgHanging out in the returns area at Ikea we were reminded a) we hate returning things, it always takes forever and b) oh yeah you can recycle toner cartridges, light bulbs and batteries at Ikea.

Cleaning Inspiration: The Phone Call

072108_tree.jpgEver talk on the phone and clean? Yeah, us too. It helps cleaning go a lot faster and gives us time to catch up with friends. It's one place that multitasking really does seem to boost our productivity. We also love satire. Maybe that's why we absolutely love this video, The Phone Call. It involves cleaning and talking on the phone and couldn't make us laugh any harder.

Cacti and Succulents for Interiors!
Austin, Texas

Adrienne shares our love for succulents and has some great tips and sources!
2373576669_a266dc2f13.jpgSuited for both modern and traditional decors, cacti and succulents are a great choice for Austin homeowners because they are already naturally occurring ingredients to the Texas countryside. Including them in your home will give your spaces a great local and regional boost. (But you don't have to live in an arid region to enjoy the look of cacti!)

2-23-housetourlogo.jpgAdrienne is trying her hand at a house tour--and how! Check out this great modern space in Austin and let us know what you think!

Strolling down a South Austin street and finding a modern home isn't quite a surprise anymore, as talented architects and designers are putting their modern marks all over our city as of recent years.
But back in 2000, before the modern building trend really took off, architect MJ Neal took a chance and built the Twin Peaks of Bouldin Creek.

See Jane Work Life Organization Sale

071708_jane.jpgAlong with the motivation posters we think anything related to 'life organization' would be totally useful. Yes we finally replaced our broken iphone with the new one so we can keep better track of appointments, errands, phone numbers etc, but still things seem to be slipping through the cracks. Maybe this sale is the answer:

LA Good Question: Good Source for Plant Containers?

071708_pots.jpgI am looking for some small plant pots I saw out but can't remember where. They were small 4in diameter unglazed clay like terra cotta but in dark gray and greenish black. Have you seen anything like that? Also I am looking for some very shallow wide containers in interesting shapes. I'm growing mainly succulents so shallow with good drainage is required.

Favorite LA Area Flea Markets?

071808_fleamarket.jpgFrom the Rose Bowl to the Melrose Trading Post, LA is filled with great flea markets. We here at AT love us some flea markets: they're affordable, fun, and can lead to exciting new discoveries in decor. We post a calendar of flea markets happening around LA each week but don't often bring up the subject specifically. So we're sondering: which markets are your favorite? And are we missing any in our listing?

Austin Scavenger: Pink 60s Hairdryer
Austin, Texas

We love craigslist and now Kristin has spotted some finds in Austin. What do you think of what she's dug up?

ausscavenger_dryer.jpgWe think this pink hairdryer, which belonged to the poster's great aunt in the 1960s and still works, would be really fun to have. (We can imagine friends' puzzled looks as they ask, "Um, is that a giant lamp...?") No price is listed, so if you're interested, send them your offer! Jump below for links to this lamp hairdryer and other good finds.

Modern Farm at West Elm: Get it Without Buying It

071708_west.jpgModern Farm. Sounds like an oxymoron along the lines of plastic glasses and jumbo shrimp, doesn't it? Well that's what West Elm is calling one of their new collections and we'd be lying if we said we weren't totally into the idea, but you can pretty easily do it yourself:

Austin Artisan Profile: Michael Yates
Austin, Texas

MY-wood.jpgDuring his first few weeks living in Japan, local furniture designer Michael Yates spent a lot of time laughing. The cultural differences between laid back Central Texas and the traditional Japanese city of Kyoto are vast, and for the then Texas A&M electrical engineering student, nearly everything was an adventure. Luckily for Austinites, Yates took more from his trip to Japan than just memories. He found among Kyoto's dense architecture and ancient temples the inspiration for his unique, Japanese-inspired custom furniture that he designs and builds here in Austin.
