Happy Fourth of July! Whatever you're doing today, we wouldn't be surprised if it involves a body of water. We're at the beach, watching fireworks on the river, escaping to a waterfall or taking advantage of friends with pools. This week's Los Angeles Times Home & Garden section takes a look at three unique Southern Californian pools. Pools figured in may of the drool-worthy Dwell on Design house tours we featured this week which may have caused some frustration among those of you who're considering building a home. If custom-design is just out of your budget, you might consider Hometta, a new firm that's selling architectural plans for what it calls small, sustainable houses. Or maybe you're just considering a kitchen renovation and are looking at kitchen cabinetry. For ages there's been two choices: high-end or Ikea. LA-LA Pool-ooza: A house with a pool's the ultimate dream for many of us in Southern California. Here's a look at three unique pools: in Pasadena, a pool as art; in Baldwin Hills, a mosaic pool from the 60's; in Fullerton, a miniature exercise pool that acts as a swim treadmill.
Hometta: small, modern home plans for the budget-minded: If you're building a home but having one custom-designed is just out of your budget, you might consider Hometta, a new firm that's selling architectural plans for what it calls small, sustainable houses. Costing from $1,195 to $3,195, they're being marketed as a way to get an architect-crafted modern house without the costs associated with custom design.
Viola Park: Modern kitchens for modern times. When replacing your kitchen cabinetry, the options have long been limited to a choice between high-end kitchen and Ikea. Viola Park, an offshoot of custom cabinetmaker Henrybuilt, aims to fill that void, offering kitchens with an average price of about $15,000, excluding backsplash & counter.
