In the northern most part of Granada Hills, in an area where time seemingly forgot, is an enclave of colourful modernist homes...a slice of Midcentury heaven filled with preserved and renovated homes all sharing the recognizable architectural details of the California-based, post-war residential real estate developer, Joseph Eichler. Cindy of OneStopModern was kind enough to invite us to step inside her renovated Eichler home on this magical block...

Ann is blessed by the fact that she lives downstairs from a talented designer who is embarking on a new career as an interior designer, Martin Hughes. "I want to help you express the beautiful, sexy person you are," Martin told Ann one day. And with that, he offered to whip Ann's apartment into shape....

We were first introduced to Susan and Michael through Susan's evocative charcoal figure drawings, which held place of honour in a friend's living room. When we were subsequently invited to dinner at their apartment, we discovered that Michael had artistic talents of his own - in the kitchen - which were on full display during an amazing meal and a few great bottles of wine. Originally, we planned to stop by their house briefly to examine the AS Gallery Hanging System which they'd installed during their recent renovation. But, sitting in their home, in a rare moment when it wasn't filled with people, Michael puttering in the kitchen, we were captivated by our surroundings. Evidence of their exuberant approach to life was apparent at every turn. We loved how this small two bedroom apartment had been transformed into a light-filled loft space, punctuated with colorful walls and art and mementos that reference their travels, their friends and their many interests. We couldn't help but pull out our camera to capture this cheerful space.

After deciding to move in together, newly engaged couple Marco and Margie spent months looking for a condo that was within their price range but not your typical DC offering of a cookie cutter rectangle with a single window along the far wall. This proved to be a far more challenging task than expected but they finally found a place to call home in a new development along the vibrant U Street Corridor. Upon entering their home we were amazed at how well they have managed to merge their possessions to create a singular design style. Their home is sunny, warm and inviting without the blandness can often permeate new constructions...

You've probably heard this design advice before: Fill your home with things you love. And we admit, we've been skeptical that this simple approach will lead to a cohesive space (e.g., can action figurines really co-exist with vintage, floral cushions?). But Jennifer's Marin County dwelling is making believers out of us. Many of her finds are from flea markets and small Bay Area shops, as well as from her travels. The end result is an apartment infused with her personality and it definitely all works together.
