CHI House Tour: Michelle Kaufmann's Smart Home

>> Enter Slideshow

2-23-housetourlogo.jpgYesterday, we trekked down to the Museum of Science and Industry to do the press tour of architect Michelle Kaufmann’s MK Solaire, which officially opens today. It was stormy, but we wouldn’t have missed it - we are very familiar with Michelle’s homes from photos, but spending time in one of them was a surprise and a treat. Even on a rainy, grey day, the light and air pouring in through the many strategically placed windows was wonderful.

But before jumping into it, here's a little tidbit of what the Stang-O'Dell home feels like: You know when you were a little kid and all of your friends met up at one friends' house because they had the best snacks and a Nintendo? Well, Laura and Jason's home has that same nostalgic vibe...it's comfortable, inviting, and just the sort of place where friends can help themselves to the fridge and kick back to some Steely Dan.

LA House Tour: Susan and Michael's Artistic Aerie

Name: Susan and Michael
Location: Santa Monica
Size: Approximately 900 sq.ft.
Years Lived in: 20+ Rented

2-23-housetourlogo.jpgWe were first introduced to Susan and Michael through Susan's evocative charcoal figure drawings, which held place of honour in a friend's living room. When we were subsequently invited to dinner at their apartment, we discovered that Michael had artistic talents of his own - in the kitchen - which were on full display during an amazing meal and a few great bottles of wine. Originally, we planned to stop by their house briefly to examine the AS Gallery Hanging System which they'd installed during their recent renovation. But, sitting in their home, in a rare moment when it wasn't filled with people, Michael puttering in the kitchen, we were captivated by our surroundings. Evidence of their exuberant approach to life was apparent at every turn. We loved how this small two bedroom apartment had been transformed into a light-filled loft space, punctuated with colorful walls and art and mementos that reference their travels, their friends and their many interests. We couldn't help but pull out our camera to capture this cheerful space.

2-23-housetourlogo.jpgOne of our favorite things happened recently - we got an email from a reader, offering to share their home with the AT community. Susannah and Jeff's southside condo (our first Hyde Park tour!) is warm, unique, filled with artwork , interesting pieces and lots of good karma.

Transplants from South Carolina, the couple seems to have settled into a chilly city by making their small corner of it warm and cozy, summed up wonderfully by Susannah: Two rather tall people with way too many books and a love of dinner parties sharing a tiny space with a Great Dane...

Black marker drawings on the floor and walls indicate future appliance and cabinet locations. We were surrounded by lots and lots of boxes. I was worried.

LA House Call: Shannon Lamden of Aunty Cookie

SLamdenCouch.jpg

Shannon Lamden (a.k.a. Aunty Cookie) first came to our attention because of her blog. We enjoyed seeing snippets of her home so much, we just had to ask her to participate in a House Call — all the way from Melbourne, Australia! Given how lovely her own textile creations are, we weren't the least bit surprised that her place is filled with lots of wonderful colors and patterns.

3-27-dc.jpgAfter deciding to move in together, newly engaged couple Marco and Margie spent months looking for a condo that was within their price range but not your typical DC offering of a cookie cutter rectangle with a single window along the far wall. This proved to be a far more challenging task than expected but they finally found a place to call home in a new development along the vibrant U Street Corridor. Upon entering their home we were amazed at how well they have managed to merge their possessions to create a singular design style. Their home is sunny, warm and inviting without the blandness can often permeate new constructions...

ATrealpeoplebook.JPGThis week we check in on Jenny and Clove, two of the most thorough and inspired people I have come across while criss-crossing the interiors landscape. Not only did they totally transform their basement studio from a dark, 50-years-worth-of-smoke-covered-walls space into a gorgeous garden lounge, but since we shot their apartment for our latest book, Apartment Therapy Presents: Real Homes, Real People, Hundreds of Design Solutions, they have taken on a second phase of upgrades.

In the furniture department, they bought two new chairs for the main space. They are "1970's De Sede (Switzerland) modernist leather cantilevered loungers & were purchased on the cheap from Ebay."

housetour2008.jpgYou've probably heard this design advice before: Fill your home with things you love. And we admit, we've been skeptical that this simple approach will lead to a cohesive space (e.g., can action figurines really co-exist with vintage, floral cushions?). But Jennifer's Marin County dwelling is making believers out of us. Many of her finds are from flea markets and small Bay Area shops, as well as from her travels. The end result is an apartment infused with her personality — and it definitely all works together.

2-23-housetourlogo.jpgWhen Pascale moved into her 5th-floor one-bedroom walk-up in the 18th arrondissement, the first thing she did was paint the walls of white -- except the deep red walls of the corridor and living room from the previous tenants. "I just love that color," says Pascale, who was a renter before she bought the place recently.
