tour2009.jpgAlmost every day, Anna and Dan wake up grateful to be living in The Louise Hand Laundry Loft. The building is rich in history, glamor, and legend. The industrial space was built to house a laundry facility, which cleaned White House laundry from the Roosevelt through Kennedy administrations. DC architect Robert Lewis and artist Sanford Shapiro bought it in 1979 and revamped it for residential use. Anna and Dan have heard great stories about their home: the basement once housed a shower for 12 and was famous for its wild parties in the 1980's! Anna now uses the space as her closet/dressing room.

Dwell on Design: Westside Home Tours, Part 2

070209-wscr01.jpgAs we noted yesterday, Sunday we were again up bright and early, this time checking out Dwell's home tours on the Westside of Los Angeles. The last two homes we saw on the tour (we only got to see 5 out of 6 due to our clutch issues) were located on opposite sides of Coldwater Canyon in the hills of Beverly Hills and they were definitely not for the shy...

>> Enter Jon and Ro's Gallery!

tour2009.jpgNot everyone enjoys stark white walls and flush flush flush as is all the rage among residential architects over the past few years. Jon of house call fame, for one, loves the visual impact of molding. Inspired by the brownstones in his Brooklyn neighborhood, he decided to bring some of that turn-of-the-century texture to what was once a bland office space in a 4 story walk-up...

Dwell on Design: Westside Home Tours, Part 1

070109-Dwellondes_small.jpgAfter Saturday's feast, we thought that we'd couldn't be anymore blown away. Well, we were wrong. After chilaquiles at our go-to Sunday breakfast spot in the Farmer's Market, we zipped on down to Venice to begin the day with a tour of the first house of the five we were able to see. In the battle of the west side v the east side, we were hard pressed to find a winner...

Location: South End, Boston
Size: 820 square feet
Years lived in: Owned 5 years

See Brad & Kendra's Home

tour2009.jpgOur memory of Brad & Kendra's Small Cool entry earlier this year was summed up in one word: WOW. Rarely does such a small space pack such a punch. Soaring ceilings, acres of custom-painted moldings, patterns and textures galore, delightfully aged wood floors, and layered lighting design create an epic impression upon entering. The open plan living / dining / kitchen is vibrant and social, while the back bedroom suite beckons like a warm, lush oasis. They've struck that illusive balance between high drama and accessible luxury...and its for sale...

Dwell on Design: Eastside Home Tours, Part 2

063009esbh07.jpgYesterday we shared our photos of three of the house tours we checked out on Saturday on LA's east side. Today, we're sharing the other two homes we saw on the east side, including the Baxter Home which was memorable not only because of the house itself but because we destroyed our car's clutch trying to find it...

Dwell on Design: Eastside Home Tours, Part 1

62909dwelltours000.jpg How was your weekend? We spent ours checking out the Dwell on Design house tours. Saturday, we drove around the east side, checking out homes some of which were in neighborhoods we were completely unfamiliar with (Glassell Park) and others that were in neighborhoods we knew well but never would've guessed that they hid breathtaking modern homes within their depths. Although there were 6 tours to see on Saturday, we only made it to 5...

House Call: Laura & Eric's Adams Morgan Condo
Washington, DC

Names: Laura and Eric
Location: Adams Morgan, Washington, DC
Size: 962 square feet
Type: Condo owned for 5 years in a Beaux Arts building

Longtime Apartment Therapy reader Laura sent us photos of her lovely Adams Morgan home, which she decorated herself. The home has warm, exposed brick walls and wood beams. House Call: MikeZ's Organic Modern Apartment
New York

Name: MikeZ
Location: West Village, NYC

My general inspiration is a modern style with natural materials, finishes, and color, with touches of chrome, texture and pattern. A lot of mixing and not so much matching. I really do love the look of branches and driftwood as an accessory and I do use them a lot in my decor...

House Call: Katherine's Sunny Studio
New York

Name: Katherine
Location: Upper East Side, NYC

Good day sunshine! Welcome to my bright, modern, mini apartment (under 400 square feet). I've lived here for a month and I'll be roaming Apartment Therapy as I search for the perfect coffee table and wall art inspirations. Cheers!

House Call: Jon's Contemporary Hybrid
Brooklyn

Name: Jon Crawford-Phillips
Location: Boerum Hill, Brooklyn

We bought this 1,100 sq ft apartment because we fell in love with three things: the high ceilings (10'6"), the layout (two equal sized bedrooms either side of an open living space) and the location in a late 19th century apartment building in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn. But the interior was completely cookie-cutter, and we wanted to not only make better use of the space but bring some character back. Installing two pairs of 8' high double doors between the living space and the bedrooms opened up the entire space, and took advantage of the high ceilings. And a floor-to-ceiling sheer ripple-fold curtain helps bring light in while blocking the view of a busy intersection. And we tried to find a contemporary hybrid of traditional Brownstone and Georgian styles (we are British, after all). Strong symmetry and single-tone color in all of the new wall moldings, picture rails and baseboards are designed to make a feature of the expansive walls.

tour2009.jpg Walking into Michele and Brad's home elicits a gasp. The gasp is a response to how much creativity, time, talent, skill, and stuff went into its assemblage. Michele is comfortable with her ability to create. After a career in fashion design, she migrated to accessories and tried her hand at sole proprietor. Since 2001, she's been creating pillows and textiles as well as amassing cool stuff for her eponymous store on Crosby Street.

Location: The Eastern Columbia Building, Downtown Los Angeles
Size: 880 square feet
Years lived in: 2.5 years (owned)

To put it mildly, we were stoked when Jeremy accepted our request to coordinate an Apartment Therapy House Tour of his downtown LA loft. First of all--his pad is located at the historic Eastern Columbia Building, an art deco masterpiece. Not to mention, Jeremy himself is an individual of notoriety directing the remake of the cult classic, The Wizard of Gore. So you can imagine our curiosity and interest in what Mr. Kasten had up his sleeve in the decor department. To find out, we brought along our generous neighbor (and amazing photographer) Jason Redmond to help out with our evening shoot...
