Keeping Your Money Underneath the Mattress…Wallet

Banks are still failing left and right, wages are dropping and layoffs are an ugly monster that has reared its head in many households (our own included). One wonders if the old timey practice of saving money under the mattress is the best bet. Designers Steve Cullen and Peter Trueblood inject a bit of levity into these uncertain times with their wallet+mattress design...

Look! Vintage Toolboxes to Organize Makeup

toolboxesmakeup1.jpg

We've never had enough sink real-estate in the bathroom to store makeup. While we look wistfully in magazines at spacious double sinks with room for extra towels and lotions, the reality is that we keep makeup on a shelf across the room and then carry it over to the mirror to use. But after getting tired of rummaging through containers every morning, we found an idea that's portable, and keeps everything in its place...

Kitchen and Bath Ideas from Cersaie Booths

When we visit a trade show, we’re often just as intrigued by the booth designs as the products themselves. At the Cersaie tile and bath show in Bologna, Italy, we snapped a few photos of booths that offered good ideas for home kitchens and bathrooms…

Herringboner: Hot for Hardwood

I've had a one-track mind lately...about floors. The project in my own house is coming along swimmingly, but I still wish there were an easy way to install a herringbone pattern on stairs. Alas, eye candy in many materials (hard and soft) will have to do for now.

Selecting the Perfectly Sized Dining Table?
Good Questions

DiningTableWestElmSmall.jpg Q: How do you decide on maximum dimensions for a dining room table? My dining room is 8'11x10'6" and when I measure out where a standard 36" width table would sit, it seems like it would be crowded. It must be mostly in my mind, since half the dining rooms listed on the MLS are that size. Still, there must be a rule of thumb about x number of feet from the wall or no more than y percentage of the total space?

Stool & Table Options for Entryway?
Good Questions

Q: I have been looking at pictures as part of a face lift for my entryway — and have been struck by the idea of a table that can shelter 2 stools as an option for kiddums coming in and needing to take off boots, etc. I attached some pics that I found inspiring.I'm looking for ideas on tables and stools that would work like this. Stools have to be light so a preschooler can pull it out when needed. The walls are Manchester Tan and nearby areas are Sweet Daphne green, and a light blue/gray. Any wood tones would work, and a little color in the stools would be welcome, too!
