Maison d'Etre is one of our very favorite stores. After our latest visit (just yesterday), we were trying to pinpoint what makes shopping there -- or even merely browsing -- such a satisfying experience, and it's that it's a domestic sensualist's delight.
The Rockridge shop is full of color (striped cafe au lait bowls, Sweep Dreams brooms, table linens, flip flop doormats), texture (bedding, Abyss towels, big French straw shopping bags, Josh Jakus felt bags), and scent (candles, including Votivo and Diptyque, wonderful soaps). There are also notebooks, greeting cards, books for kids and food lovers, glassware, tableware, vases, Oliver Hemming's Nio tea and coffee set, and hanging lamps.
There really and truly is something for everyone, and for every price range. On top of that, the staff is friendly, which is all too rare these days.

Years ago, I lived right on the other side of the BART tracks from this store ... and I was in there ALL THE TIME. It is still one of my favorite places in the Bay Area for home accessories and gifts. Any time I'm in Oakland, I stop in here (and cannot leave empty-handed).
This is one of my favorite stores on College Ave. They carry a lot of the standard modern accessories, but also mix in unique items that you don't find elsewhere. And they carry such a well-edited, wide product range.
