Even as babies, kids are fascinated with remotes and phones and pretty much anything that has a button. That's why we love this craft project: building your kids their own personal control panel.
Yvette from Abernathy Crafts put this project together with her kids. As she points out, it's a great upcycling project, since you can use things you find in your junk drawer, garage, or garbage can. Get the kids involved and ask them to come up with ideas for different controllers. Then, when it's done, they can control the world right from your backyard.

Shaw's Original Fir...
My kids would love this!
We did a similar craft for my son's b-day party several years ago. All the kids at the party made superhero control panels. More info in my post:

Thanks for the great tutorial, Yvette. Awesome project.
I think this would be very popular with the young ones, and having them help you build it would even make it more fun. Nice job.
I think this could be a way of helping children that have difficulty with opening up, or easing down, or everything. Something like, if you have a very active, loud child, let them physically "turn it down a notch". Or a child that has difficulty talking about things, let them "open up the volume", and close it down again when they feel it's enough. Lots of possibilities.
I'd LUV a control panel for my kid, so she would do her homework on time, not talk back, help out with chores, give me my BlackBerry back... and also so lower her voltage to put her to sleep when it's late.
