Modern-lined versions of simple items like plant stands can sometimes be frustratingly difficult to find, especially on a budget. Check out this hack that will have your plants sitting pretty for less...
Over at IKEA Hackers they've featured a great plant stand creation that's made from a bit of leftover wood and an IKEA laundry bag holder. The idea is simple, and often IKEA's metal framework pieces of this nature can be quite sturdy when a flat surface is screwed to the top.
The result looks sleek, modern and without a hint of the whimsy or old world feel that so many plant stands are plagued with. It's a great tutorial to get you thinking about how you can showcase your plants instead of just shoving them in a corner to be forgotten about.

Is it me or does this not actually seem cheap when you consider that the Antonius stand from Ikea is around 50 bucks?
Am i missing something? Then again, I guess "cheap" means different things to different people.
haha..... when I heard "cheap" I assumed $10 or $15. It seems to me that for $50 you could buy a really nice ready-made plant stand.
I'm pretty sure they used the $13 stand for this...

On the IKEA website the laundry bag holder is only $6.99.

Why would that plant even need a stand? Seems like a knock-over accident waiting to happen....
Depending on various circumstances ceramic pots aren't desirable as they do tend to dry out quicker than plastic.

Ok, maybe it is me, but why are "whimsy" and "old world feel" something one is "plagued with"? Seems to me either would be preferable to what this is. I can appreciate clean, sleek, modern design as much as the next person, but this is not that - this is cheap basic ikea, void of style, designed to be hidden in a closet.
I'm with Textiles -- I'd rather have whimsy or old world feel or just about anything other than a cheap-looking plastic piece of junk holding up my plant.
For inexpensive options, you can always hit various thrift stores; you'd probably find tons of options of either plant stands or items you could use to make them, and I bet you would find something more attractive than this.
This is a great idea. Love the look. Wish the link worked and there were more details in the post regarding how much the project costs etc. Thanks!
There are so many plant stands in thrift stores for a lot cheaper. You could paint them, wrap them in rope or whatever.
Ignoring the merits (or lack thereof) of the stand itself .... I agree with Anna Europe that the plant shown wouldn't work on any stand of that height. The proportions are all wrong.
Also agree that "whimsy" and "old world feel" are things many of us strive for rather than feel "plagued" with.
Also agree that there are many many other low-cost and better-looking options for raising a plant off the floor, either using curbside or thrift shop finds or by simply repurposing something lurking in your garage or basement... perhaps an artfully arranged stack of bricks or an overturned galvanized bucket?
I have this laundry bag holder and it is actually surprisingly well made, modern, metal and only $12.99 (however I use it for a laundry bag holder). I think it is by far the nicest thing in that hideous room pictured above!
