Those plastic mats that sit under desks aren't exactly attractive, nor are they earth friendly. They are needed, however, because static electricity isn't your friend in home office or craft environments. (Plus, rolling a chair on carpet can pretty much suck it.) For an eco-friendly option, check out this prettier and less expensive plywood version instead!

Our friends at Ucreate tipped us off to this fun project happening over at Sugar Bee Crafts. You'll need to pay attention to the type of plywood you purchase from the store, but this project would still be easy to do with a earth-friendly mindset. The wood was stained and stenciled to give it some appeal for the space. You could use milk paint or leftovers from your low VOC options from the last room you painted and then give the whole thing a good rub down with a little wax.

It's an easy project and a great solution to the majority of retail options that are available as even the eco-friendly ones will end up costing you an arm and a leg. This one will run you the cost of one board and a trip to the hardware store!

Check out more details of the process over at Sugar Bee Crafts.
