If you're finding the fairy garden trend a little twee, then how about getting down and dirty with some roly polies? The ubiquitous potato bug, Armadillidium vulgare, makes a great introductory specimen for exploring your backyard through bugs.

Debi at Go Explore Nature put together this cute idea for bringing a little nature inside while exploring your own backyard. WIth a little help from the experts at Los Angeles' Natural History Museum, she discovered exactly what roly-polies need, how to build them a welcoming home, and how to find them in the garden.

With a terrarium either indoors or out, you can be sure that your kids will always have some bug activity to observe. Keep them for a few days, or, apparently, much longer; these crustaceans can live up to three years.
