Vertical gardening, although practical isn't always stylish. Check out this super simple IKEA hack to bring a little modern style to your outdoor space.
Sometimes all it takes to provide a little inspiration for your outdoor space is a trip to the hardware store. These basic wood IKEA planter boxes came to life the minute they were attached to a long board, allowing them to be hung on the wall.
Not only does this add a little warmth to a clean and modern look, it's easy and inexpensive to recreate yourself. Make sure to check out the scrap section at your local big box hardware store, where there's a good chance you can find a few pieces of lumber that will make do for just a few bucks! It's not too late to start your garden!

Does anyone have recommendations for a good (preferably inexpensive) sealant to use for outdoor projects like this?
Love this idea!!!! Thompsons Water Seal works well for projects like this.
it might just be me, but I can't find those planteers on the ikea website... are they only sold in stores?
First, the headline is wrong. They are spelled Bjurön. Second, they are no longer available in the US.
What would be the best way to mount something like this?
Personally I wouldn't trust just any old box from Ikea to plant edibles in; who knows what kinds of chemicals are used in their products. Plus, how hard is it to just make a box? If you really want to make a planter, just get some cedar wood from the local hardware store and make a few of your own.
@ weatherman, if you follow the link you will see that the plants are still in the pots and haven't been transplanted into the box.
I made hanging planters out of the same Ikea boxes with some eyelet screws and twine. Also had to drill out some holes in the bottom for drainage. I don't have edibles planted in them, just some bonsai trees.
@thehighlanlow, Oooh! Bonsai's! What a beautiful visual garden that would make!!
this is awesome! i have a TON of these boxes this size and square ones from my wedding. seriously like 30-40 of them! this will work perfectly!
