Ever find yourself trying to capture a fun night out at the pub with your friends? It's tough. Without a flash, the pictures are too dark. But with a flash, everybody's all washed out. You might think the only solution is investing in an expensive external flash and diffuser, but you really just need to look down at the trash bin for a discarded cigarette pack.

It's true: You can make a pop-up flash diffuser for free using only an empty pack of cigarettes.

This clever hack from monkeywithagun at Instructables uses the foil lining of a pack of Marlboro's to create a flash diffuser that improves your late-night pub pictures.

And it's so simple. Just reverse the foil inside the pack so the inside of the carton is covered with the shiny side of the foil, then cut open the bottom of the pack. It should slide right on to your pop-up flash so you can start taking flash-diffused photos right away. Check out the whole post at Instructables for complete directions and pictures of each step.

The image to the left, featured on monketwithagun's linked Flickr photo stream, was taken with the cigarette flash diffuser.

This is, of course, not even comparable to the results you could get from investing in professional photography equipment. But at the bargain price of free, this cigarette pack diffuser definitely gets the job done.
