Hi, my name is Sarah and I love bench. I also love lamp, but that's a movie reference and a topic for a whole other blog post. Benches are fabulous pieces in the home as they take up very little room and make a big impact on the functionality of a space. Here's how to make one that's toddler size!
Destri, one of the bloggers at The Mother Huddle, made this cute bench for her young daughter from an old shelf which she padded with batting, covered in fabric and, of course, attached legs. The project really is simple and you'll no doubt find many benefits to having a bench this size like helping your toddler put their shoes on without their feet dangling or having to climb onto a grownup piece of furniture.

This tutorial is excellent! Just wondering, though... anyone have an idea for how to make the fabric cover removable so I can wash it? Our chairs get filthy and I'm sure this bench would be covered in food and spills in no time. I'm not so handy so I have no idea what the solution could be. Velcro tabs? Leave some long strips of fabric on the underside and just "tie bows" under to keep it in place? Help.
Super cute!
@thefayga - what about using oil cloth or an indoor/outdoor fabric? Just wipe clean.
@thefayga - Your ideas sound great, I'd probably cover the bench with a wipeable indoor/outdoor fabric then put the decorative fabric overtop, with tie closures, velcro or even little loops and screw large-headed screws into the underside of the bench to hook the loops to.
You had me at I love bench!
As to making it removable, I would sew elastic around the bottom, like a tiny fitted bed sheet. It wouldn't be quite as tailored, but it would work ok.
ooh, thanks guys!
Love this - and I have a real soft spot for any kids-sized furniture. Must give this a go this weekend!
What a fantastic tutorial! My daughter loves "her" sized furniture. Definitely going on my to-do list!
I love Destri's ideas--this bench is too cute!
Nice Anchorman reference!
Where did you find this fabric and what is the design name....I LOVE IT!!
You could always make it an elastic cover.
