So you move into a new place and you're a little short on furniture. Although you can find simple pieces on Craigslist that can make do for temporary times, it's not always in the budget.
Check out this creative solution that will keep your stuff in reach until you find the perfect storage solution, or rather, if you're like me, until you can afford it.
Over at Hometone they've shared an inexpensive way to make some temporary storage. You could easily spray paint them or cover them with paper to give it a more couture look. It will obviously still be a cardboard shelf, but there's something to be said for making do with what you have until you can bring perfect pieces into your life.
Sure, you can leave things packed away in boxes and avoid the whole fiasco, but coming from someone who still has things in boxes from a year ago, the idea is rather tempting just to be able to easily access things until I find my perfect Mid Century shelving.
Check out Hometone for the instructions to make your own, or leave us your opinion on this idea in the comments below.

Shaw's Original Fir...
This is the perfect place to put the vase that I fashioned out of a beer can.
Hmmm.... no picture of it with anything on it... I think I will pass on this.
Or snag some free milk crates and have something that will actually hold your stuff.
@lorelski- Or this vase!

If I had time to make my own furniture out of moving boxes, I would have the time to scour Craigslist for functional pieces of actual furniture....
I hope I am never this broke.
Actually, there's an even CHEAPER storage solution for books if you don't have cash to buy shelves.
It's called "the floor."
Seriously...WTF?
Um....what? Sorry, not on board with this one.
When I first moved out on my own, I hardly had a budget for food and rent, nevermind second hand furniture. Any "new" acquisitions came from scouring alleys for people's throwaways. I also remember having an end table made of a cardboard box with a tablecloth on top, and a book shelf made of found boards and milk crates. I would TOTALLY have made this shelf, and would have been pleased as all heck with myself. :)
@SQ, thanks for the link, where the comments got me helplessly laughing. And @SubwayKnitter, you expressed my true reaction to this cardboard project.
Signs of the times, perhaps? Sigh.
AT: ditto on modtramp's WTF? c'mon... how LAME.
love,
FTZ
Can I ask the obvious question here? How the hell is that thing in the picture going to old up a paperclip let alone some books?
As others have said - stacking on the floor is a better idea than this. Also, have you ever heard of the "free" section of Craigslist? Check it out, and save your boxes for moving.
a simple pile of books holds itself perfectly well
It is good to live in an area with a robust "zip" section on craigslist....
