Although most families these days have many of the members texting away, consider setting up a dedicated message center at home to keep all of your schedules in order. We love this version that was
featured in Sunset magazine that is an easy do-it-yourself. Pick up some chalkboard paint and some cork boards at your local craft store. You can use an existing frame or pick one up as well. Put together the pieces the way you prefer. We could see making a few versions of these - an all chalkboard one, an all cork one, etc.

I have a message board on my kitchen's wall and I use it everyday to monitor our family's activities.
The chalkboard looks nice but in many cases after you use it a few times it doesn't look so great:-(
Here is another nice one with a cute frame:

I would recommend something like this:

Simple, clean and beautiful.
I recommend using dry erase board paint. It's visually more appealing than green or black chalkboard paint and it won't 'ghost' like chalkboard.
Can't you clean the chalk off the board with a moist paper towel? I'd definitely bulk up on the cork (a thicker sheet of cork, or perhaps two), or nothing's going to stick in that cute memo board.
Why not just find an old recessed panel cabinet door from the Reuse store or the IKEA As-Is area, paint the panel w/ some blackboard paint and hang it on the wall using a couple of picture-hanging hooks?
I made a chalkboard for my kitchen. I found this huge vintage frame for 10.00 and went to Home depot and had a piece of wood cut to size from their scape bin, that cost 1.75 sanded it and painted it with black chalkboard paint. I painted the frame a pale robin's egg blue. I adore it and use it all the time.
MDF would of been better but they did not have the right size for the frame. I use a clean wet cloth to wipe it down.
