Although we try to stick more to home decor rather than food, one essential birthday party cake for kids is rainbow chip. It's packed with color and until now, always came from a box. We were so excited about this diy tutorial to make it yourself that we just had to share.

There are some things that until you make them yourself, you don't really consider doing at home. Most of us by now have made a cake of sort from scratch in our kitchen, but the idea of making something complicated like rainbow chip — we'll save that one for Betty Crocker while we wrangle laundry and wipe noses and behinds!

Ashley of Not Without Salt set out to change a family tradition of making Rainbow Chip birthday cake each year for birthdays. With a little food coloring and a small amount of prep work she was able to take the traditional box favorite to a whole new level. Emeril might say she kicked it up a notch, but we're pretty sure she kicked it up several.

Check out the full tutorial over at Not Without Salt as it's sure to have you running for the kitchen during nap time to see if you have all the ingredients needed! Even if you don't have a birthday party in the near future, it's still a great recipe to print off and add to your files to save for later, you never know when you'll need a little color and flare for your next get together or bash.
