I just ran across this great little DIY for wood coasters that can also be used for wall decor. It is a simple and stylish way to add a little something unique to your table. Follow me to find out more.
You begin with purchasing slices of birch from a craft or flower shop and deciding on your artwork, try using simple silhouettes, text or a mixture of the two. Then you trace your graphic through carbon paper onto your wood. Your last step is to outline and paint your image. If you will use them for coasters you might want to put a layer of polyurethane or acrylic spray on them to keep them looking bright, new and lovely.

I like that you can personalize these or make several if you have some sort of theme party..fun.
I didn't realize that carbon paper still existed..who knew.
Yes, carbon paper is still available and if you look in art supply stores, you'll see them in sizes much bigger than 8-1/2 x 11. Did a couple of table sized copies back in the day.
If you put a sealant on the coasters, remember to do it on both sides. Doing it on one side only may cause it to warp. Do a couple of light coats, rather than one heavy coat. If you're using oil based poly, dilute it with naptha 50-50 to get a wash coat: it soaks into the fibers. Then over coat with undiluted poly for the 2nd and 3rd coats.
I love the idea of using birch. Hope to try this soon. I also love that you used carbon paper to trace the letters. Now my mind is racing with all the other possibilities for carbon paper.
If you want them to be effective coasters and not scratch the daylights out of your table surfaces, you need to attach felt to the back of the wood. Don't use silicone or rubber dots, they can have a chemical reaction with the table's finish and leave small holes in the finish.
This is soo cute! Great idea. :) -http://www.jrsalescorp.com/
i used a slice off our christmas tree trunk to make our grandsons christmas ornament..... used wood burning tool, drill and paint...ready made slice may have been easier!
