Two years ago I was floored when an ultrasound showed that I was expecting twins. Big reveals aren't really my style, but the news was sufficiently momentous that I wanted to share it in a memorable way.
I grew up in New Orleans where endless king cakes leading up to Mardi Gras are a way of life, so I decided to use one to share my news. King cake season runs from twelfth night to Mardi Gras. Inside of each king cake there is a little plastic baby representing the baby Jesus. Whoever gets the baby in their piece of cake is supposed to host the next king cake party.
It wasn't too hard to find a bakery in Chicago that was making king cakes, and they were happy to give me a spare plastic baby when I told them my plan. I was able to find the insertion point of baby A and add baby B, then I made sure that I got the piece with the two babies. It didn't take long for our family to do the math and the cake was delicious.
Happy Mardi Gras! Laissez les bons temps rouler!
