Hard as we try to replicate the beauty of the ecological world, nothing so universally captivates our attention as objects made of natural materials. But, even here, there's natural, and there's natural. Margaret Dorfman's vegetable bowls take organic beauty to another level.Dorfman makes her own parchment from vegetables as diverse as radishes to broccoli. She then forms the parchment into works of art, each of which has the preciousness of glass, but effortlessness of freshly-picked garden vegetation. I've often seen dried fruit or chili peppers sandwiched between sheets of plastic in a picnic-worthy salad bowl, a kind of earthy craft object. But what separates Dorfman's work is that the sculptural character of each piece has one foot in the earth and the other in some ethereal world outside it.
