Room for Color
This room is nice, but there doesn't seem to be a cohesive style or particularly great use of colour. There are a lot of colours which work well together, but I don't see a lot of great design or styling.
There's a lot going on here. I like the colors, but there seems to be a lot of stuff. And I have to agree with JasmineIsDomestic - you have a mixture of styles that don't mesh well, like dorm room-type lamps with what look like heirloom furniture, and a contemporary cabinet with Pottery Barn-esque wall shelves. And a TV that's insanely small, to the point where I'm not sure how you could watch it from the sofa.
The commenters above are crazy! I love this apartment... it is cozy and eclectic! I love how you've mixed the antique paintings and vintage furniture with the modern pattern curtains and bright dining chairs!
I agree with sberrens. I like the white walls and wood floors and think the accent colors are very cohesive--pulling the red, blue, green, and yellow from the curtain fabric (I love that pattern!). It's also refreshing to see a space on AT where it's obvious someone lives there, has collected their furnishings over time, doesn't feel beholden to any particular era/design style or the (generally unattainable) idea that houses should look like the styled magazine spreads we all know them to be. It's also clear that this person has art, framed nicely, that's meaningful to her.
And, Pi, though I usually agree with your comments, I think you're off the mark about the TV. YOU may not be able to comfortably view a small TV from the couch, but some of us rarely watch TV so small will do. I'm guessing Margaret is in that category.
I love this room and am happy to see one without a cohesive aesthetic. It looks real, not over the top expensive and it is pretty. The colors are happy but not obnoxiously so and I do like that it would be very easy to change the feel of the room with just a couple manipulations of accent color. Bravo.
I love seeing this eclectic and pulled together home. It has a cohesiveness I have not managed to create....yet. The fact that you dare to enter a room with white walls in a color competition, and manage to load the room with beautiful, saturated blue and green items is very impressive. When I was scrolling through the main page, your room caught my eye and I didn't even notice the white walls until I read the text. Great job!
I'm kind of in the middle here. I love this room. I love the eclectic feel and all the colors. It seems cozy and someplace that I would feel comfortable and at home. However, I don't really think this is the contest for you. I don't feel like the charm of this room is in the "color pallette" so much as it is in the obvious love you have for everything in this room and the thought you clearly put into how it would all fit together. You say that the color palette works well for your home because it is small. Maybe "small but cool" would be a better contest for you. That's just my opinion, though. :)
I like this apartment too. The combination of colors, styles and the artwork in particular are lovely. The TV looks like a TV/VCR combo so I am guessing Margaret watches movies/shows on VHS cassettes. I have a huge number of Law & Order episodes on VHS that I taped over the years and I still watch them on my old school TV/VCR.
Thank you all for the kind comments.
My home is filled with things that I've loved and cherished for years. All of the art work is very personal. My mother was an incredible painter and print maker and I have a lot of her work in my home.
KatiGnome - Thank you for your kind words. I just may enter the Small Cool contest :).
Lynnindc - You are correct. We didn't want a huge TV in our living room and yes we do still use it to watch VHS tapes (and we don't have cable either!!!).
I'm a TV/VCR owner myself! :)
Thank you all for your wonderful comments.
Many of the things in our home have been collected over the years and are very personal to me. Artwork is very important in my life. My mother was an incredible painter and print maker and I have a lot of her work in our home. I also love to proudly display all of my son's art, as well (there's a bit of mine, too).
KatieGnome - thank you for kind words. I just may enter the Small Cool Contest :).
Lynnindc - You're correct, we do still watch VHS on the TV and we didn't want a huge set in our living room (we don't even have cable!!).
Our home is truly an eclectic labor of love.
I almost love this room. For me, I don't think there has to be a "cohesive" style throughout in order for a room to be interesting, tranquil or just plain cool. And while I love the colors and textures in the room, I am really thrown by just how much stuff is involved.
Editing down this space so that useable stuff is organized and other stuff is maybe re-placed in another room or swapped out for a larger accessory vs 10 of them....that would go a long way towards making the room a bit easier to "see" and appreciate all the wonderful detail and colors.
But I say this from a purely design/editing perspective. It's not my home, I don't have any personal connection to the objects and that's up to the person who lives there!!
Really, really beautiful.
Lovely. I want to come for coffee or tea & hear the story behind each carefully collected piece. Might wanna plan for a weekend guest tho. Gotta feeling here there's lot of rich heritage secreted away in that room.
And THAT folks, is what makes a house a home.
I can't say it better than discerning did above.
Absolutely beautiful.
I think the angle of the first picture implies there is too much going on in this room, but the other pictures make it clear there is isn't, there is instead precisely enough going on. This room actually reminds me of my grandmother's sitting room, not because it looks like it in any way but because both rooms are so relaxed and warm and welcoming. My grandmother lit a fire every day, winter and summer, and this room manages to convey that same fireside welcome, just without the actual fireside.
@funkytown - I should have rephrased - it wasn't the size that was a moment of contention for me, it was the distance of the TV from the sofa in combination with the size. It just seems a little far away, considering its size.
I love, love, love this room. What a wonderful refuge. I too am a VCR, small TV owner and I really appreciate the sensibility of not having the TV overwhelm the room. It's really hard to find that balance between a beautifully designed room and a livable space, and this room captures that.
<p><strong>Anna Maria Island Wedding Packages</strong> - I love the minimalistic look. Without trying to hard you have enhanced the look of your room.</p>
