The babies are coming! Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon's twins are due within the month, and the expectant parents have shared their east and west coast nurseries with Life & Style Magazine.
Opulent? No doubt. Internet buzz has a staggering range of budget reports, from $100K to $1 million. Let's just call it very expensive and very fancy. There are lots of things to like about what we have seen so far, even if it isn't our personal style: the cream colored walls and textiles with restrained green and pink accents are peaceful and calming. The gliders for two grownups with a shared ottoman is a brilliant setup for twins when space permits. We love the idea of mom and dad being able to hold the babies and look at each other. That giant giraffe is pretty cool too. Pictures have not yet been released of the LA nursery, which has a cloudscape ceiling with twinkling golden stars.

Not my style... but still beautifully done.
I bet they're so excited! How could you walk into that room & see the double cribs & double chairs and NOT be excited? How fun!
Honestly, it's A LOT more understated than I expected. And Blablas!!
I'm with nellymom. I don't think it's all that OTT, considering it belongs to Carey. It's actually very beautiful. I've seen nurseries on this site belonging to "normal" people that are just as "opulent" so I say kudos.
How lovely and tasteful.
Its very pretty, but has no contrast for the babies. Infants need contrast to develop interest and other cognitive functions. I also question the placement of the framed decor above the beds - not too safe. I get the feel of a church brides room, not a nursery. Not a fan of the curtains either. I do love the symetry apparent throughout.
It’s beautiful, but also looks comfortable and practical. The colors are so soothing and the tufted furniture makes me want to curl in a ball and take a nap. I like that the furniture style allowed them to avoid sharp corners to worry about with early walkers. Love the crib canopies and chair set-up.
The two different cribs seem like an odd oversight for such a clearly well thought-out room. I’m sure they wanted to avoid matchy-matchy (which I fully support), but the solid back and slat back next to each other are driving me nuts.
I think it is darn ugly. I don't personally like any of it. Still love Mimi though!!
It's so fabulous, it looks like such a calm and comfy room.
Ellz Pink Villa,
Contrast does help infants with thier development, but that's not necessary for the space they'll be sleeping in. One of the most important things we teach them as infants is developing good sleeping habits. They need a non-stimulating, relaxing environment to learn how to do that.
the nannies are going to love hanging out in there!
elegant & pretty!
I don't like it. Low-contrast (which means it's easier for tired adults to trip in the dark), less visual stimulation for the kids. Also, a PITA to clean--their poor maids. All that drapery will need to be replaced after some squirt poo.
Lovely, but my first thought was about separated the babies would be from one another. My identical twin nieces did not want to be separated into different cribs; they relaxed the most when they could sleep side by side or at least in sight of one another.
Beautiful, as expected, but not very practical.
gag. AT readers are way more stylin' than Mariah's decorator!
No, thank you.
I hate seeing nursery's like this. All about what the decorator trying to be grand and show it in the design. where's the fun element? where the cuteness element? Where's the personal touches?
I would say the freakin' giraffe counts as at least cute if not personal. Custom, at least.
I think I've seen cuter cribs than those, though. Even Stokke cribs.
Meh. Just looks like they spent a ton of money. No personality. No creativity.
I like it except for the drapery. But it does kind of look like what a rich person's idea of babyhood is.
I have got to stop reading the comments on these things....
darling-if you can afford all the nannies & maids in the world. but not realistic & practical for the real moms who really do the actual work.
Coming from the artist who painted her ceiling....Me...the room is quite amazing actually. Very calming..
Beautiful color combination. It feels very calming and relaxing. I love the drapery behind the cribs.
"I hate seeing nursery's like this. All about what the decorator trying to be grand and show it in the design. where's the fun element? where the cuteness element? Where's the personal touches?"
95% of the nursery tours on this site leaves me with that feeling.
I think it's really nice! I know plenty of "real moms" who would probably incorporate some of what Carey has done into their own nursery designs.
Besides, no need to look down on her as a mother just bcz she's rich. It's not like she made her money sitting on her behind doing nothing.
lol@Chenell!! This doesn't compare to that one "Popular Name" Thread
is it bad that im turning 30 and i still like these nursery picts??? sigh.
Beautiful but looks bit unpractical...
I think it's very charming. I really love the miniature table and chairs - I can picture many tea parties in the Carey-Cannon future.
The curtains behind the cribs look like the curtains behind caskets in a funeral home. All you need are torchieres at the heads and foots.
That said, I do like the facing chairs with the ottoman. There's a lot of time to be spent there, better face to face than on a couch.
I think it's pretty and not at all OTT. If this were a "regular" person's nursery I bet the comments would be more positive...
While this is a pretty nursery I have to agree there are no personal touches. Everything seems designed by anyone but the couple.
Also- totally an aside but something I mentioned to a friend yesterday...is it just me or has Mariah been pregnant for what seems like years? I feel like I've been reading about her being pregnant for the longest time- very strange!!
It does seem like she's been pregnant for a minute. I thought she was due in March :-p
I wish I could see the painting on the ceiling! Also, I like the French doors.. but that's neither here nor there.
Oh, I just saw that Mariah Carey had her twins this morning. Cool. No names yet.
In my opinion, this nursery shows the following things:
- neither them, nor the designer have ever been to a nursery probably and have never read any books on what babies need around them;
- how this room suits the rest of the house was more important than suiting the babies' needs;
- the personnel who will take care of the babies and the cleaning staff will have a hard job.
The colours are nice, though, but not the best choice in a nursery.
I really wish the best for both the parents and the babies but as time goes on they will probably see that they spent a lot of money on something that looks good but works poorly.
Please, all that baby needs is a crib and a tit.
